Look in your local newspaper. There are always ads from people seeking homes for puppies. If people can"t find a home for a puppy, those little pets are either destroyed, or taken to a shelter, which can be a really good thing. Hopefully, someone, like yourself, will opt to give it the home it deserves.
A lot of the websites offering puppies are scams, taking your money, and they don"t have any puppies. Personal experience. Talk to a live person, no money up front, make arrangements to personally see the puppy before any money exchanges hands. Make sure you know exactly who you are dealing with.
One more benefit of adoption from a shelter is: they are micro chipped, first set of shots, and reduced spay or neuter rates from a local vet.
Good luck with your puppy search.

Hey Hey, chill out! petfinder.com doesn't have all shelter dogs! Most of the dogs are in foster care (temporary placement until the dog finds a forever home) at someones home and are well fed, and cared for, and get to interact with their other pets or other dogs everyday. And the rescue groups go to different pet stores (like to petco for over in my area) on the weekends and set up shop so people can go look at them. You can even foster a dog also and see if its going to work out between you two. So the dogs are not in some shelter locked up in kennels all day until somebody lets them out. Otherwise on any other sites you are gonna find puppy mills or other bad quality, and diseased dogs whom the breeder just care about taking you money and have no interest in the health and wellbeing of the dogs whatsoever. It would be wise to go with a rescue group on petfinder.com, since they have the best deals. The rescue group for my area has many dogs, and they come with current shots, are spayed or neutered, and current on heartworm and flea medications, all for a adoption fee of $95.00. What more could you ask for? A way better deal than at some shelter.

Do you mean a breeder?
If you know what type of dog you want just type in "(Breed of dog) Breeders in (your state)" in Google or Yahoo and you can browse through some breeders.
http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/purebred.htm
To help you figure out what type of dog you want, if you don't already know.
Or, do you mean you want a dog that someone is giving away? Because you can also try Craigslist.
http://cnj.craigslist.org/
On the right is a list of states, just click your state and then a list of cities will come up, and click on the city nearest to you.
Then once you're in your city under "Community" .. click on PETS and you can see ads for pets.
I have met people who can no longer care for their dogs, and I have fostered a couple of them until the owner found them a new home.
I hope you find what you're looking for!
Good luck!

You'll need to some research, pick out a breed and then go to http://www.akc.org and look up the breeder lists for that breed.
Without even having a breed in mind you make it really hard to not find a dog from a shelter.

Why are you so concerned about a dog from a shelter?
They have tons of wonderful puppies who need homes.
I would much rather see someone take a shelter baby than to buy a dog from a back yard breeder who " home raises" puppies.

why wouldn't you want a puppy from a shelter? there are so many dogs and puppies in need of a good home. but if you must find a dog elsewhere... look in your local newspaper.. there are often pupies for sale or free to a good home... make sure you don't get your puppy from a mill because they may have heath problems from inbreeding ... good luck

do no longer use a stroller. Yorkies are very lively canine, she would be able to be extra advantageous than satisfied to accompany you on her own 4 legs- and because Yorkies are VERY companies to weight problems, it is going to likely be plenty fit for her to get a lot of exercising. we've an 8 month previous Yorkie and he or she runs circles around our 3 Papillons- in simple terms get a snug harness and leash and go away her on the floor the place canine belong. I desire wellbeing over organic decision.

did you look at your local newspapers! you can also check your local online newspapers in the classifed sections.... don't go for the first one you come to though... search around and ask LOTS of questions! the reason for this is to ensure that you aren't buying from a backyard breeder!! do some research and write down little notes you would like to ask... if they are a responsible breeder then they would be glad to answer any of your questions happliy... hope this helps

What my suggestion would be is for you to look in the advertisments of you local newspaper. Usually the people who put adds in will probably let you come check them out so you can decide if you want it. Good luck with the puppy. :)

You must do your research. Look up breeders in your area who specialize in the breed you want. Then Read, read and read more.
You need to be a responsible dog lover first, then a responsible dog owner, after.
Please research.
