A Honda Civic is one that fits the bill. I have ten friends who swear by it.

Honda Civic easily is the best small car.

If you need a bigger sedan, the Ford Fusion can be had for well below $20000 and so far looks promising. Ford does not have a long standing history of reliability and resale values, but this is one of their better efforts in some time. An Accord or Camry would be better overall choices, but will surely cost more.

Consumer Reports just put out their yearly car buying guide (April 2007 magazine) and it is very informative and inexpensive.

Honda Accord or Toyota Camry.
Very reliable and unlike many 'domestic' cars are manufatured in the U.S.

The KIA and the HYUNDAI are foriegn made but really good dependable cars. Both have 10year/1000,000 warantees. I've owned both and they're great cars and great on gas.

I know I'm biased here, but I've had this car, and earlier versions, since 1982, and I DARE ANYONE to show me a car better than this one. Volkswagen makes incredible diesel engines, and in 1982, I bought a one year old Rabbit diesel 5-speed for the sole purpose(s) of being cheap to buy, cheap to maintain, and very high gas mileage. I think I paid around $6,000.00 for it, and it had around 16,000 miles on it, and I easily got in the mid-forties mpg. Now, you need to know that good diesels get better as they get older, and by the time I was forced to give it up, it had 326,600 miles on it, gave me 57mpg (yes, I did say fifty-seven miles per gallon), and the maintenance was oil changes and tire changes, and . . . uh . . . oh, yeah, I did replace the breaks at around a hundred-and-something thousand miles, I can't remember exactly since it was so long ago. I may have bought some new shock absorbers somewhere along the line. Well, anyway, I had to give it up because in 2000 I was in a serious on-the-job accident wherein I lost my right leg above the knee, so I couldn't drive standard transmission anymore, so, I bought a 2002 VW Jetta TDI, which, in laymen's terms means "Turbo Diesel". Technically it means something else, but, us laymen who aren't full time mechanics, only care about what it is to us. And I had to buy automatic transmission, so I've only got 47mpg so far, at 78,000 miles, but with careful driving, this car will last me AT LEAST 200,000 miles, and my mileage will go up to 50mpg at least, just as good diesels do. They have been so good that I bought my son a 2004 VW Jetta TDI when he came home from his first tour of duty in Iraq, and as a 20th birthday present, and his has 5-speed manual transmission, and he's already getting 52 or so mpg and he's got maybe 40,000 miles on it, and he's not a very calm driver, if you know what I mean. I got a spoiler put on the back trunk at his request, so, if you see a VERY BLACK (so much so that it shines in the dark!!) VW Jetta TDI in your rear view mirror that seems to be screaming towards your rear end, MOVE!! It's my son and he's still not aware that I bought it for him as an economy car!! He does brag about the gas mileage as he goes to see his "girlfriends" he's "met" on the internet since he's returned from his second tour in Iraq. Currently the EPA has blocked further imports of VW diesels as they have come up with yet another something to gripe about, but VW is planning on bringing their new model back in 2008, and if I could justify getting one I'd do it. They've got to be great. EPA has driven the prices up, but, they're worth it!! And I can guarantee that my Jetta TDI and my son's will each see at least 200,000 miles on them, and my son's 5-speeder will be getting around 55mpg before trades his in. Oh, and my step-son bought a 2003 version of my Jetta TDI that looks exactly like mine, and he's doing just fine. And my engineer friend in Ohio bought a 2000 year model and he was very quickly getting 52+mpg. His was a 5-speed also. At today's higher gas prices, even with diesel being priced at the top of the gas prices, I can't imagine anyone driving anything else, but, then, what do I know. You'll do great buying a used Jetta TDI or a new one when the EPA lets them be imported again in 2008. I'll definitely be envious if you get one, but then, I'd be embarrassed and ashamed to let mine go without at least 150,000 miles on the odometer. It's a matter of pride, you know. God Bless you.
