You should check out the mortality rates for both. Not many people realize that a high percentage of patients undergoing these surgeries die or have severe health issues within two years of the operation. Ask your doctor these questions before having either surgery:

How many of these have you personally done?
What is the post-operation survival rate after 1 year? 2 years?
What long term health risks are associated with this operation?
How many of these are done AT THIS HOSPITAL each year?
What is the mortality rate for the operation at this hospital?
How does that compare to the national average for this operation?

If they can't or won't answer, DO NOT have the operation with that consultant, or at that hospital.

You are taking a significant personal risk with your health - you are entitled to answers to all these questions.

This is a question to ask a surgeon. Also, it is a good practice to get counseling to determine if you will be OK with life after the procedure. It isn't problem free. Good luck.
