It might not be the best idea to get his picture. I didn't used to see anything wrong with it, until I heard someone's logic on it:
You get your grandpa's picture tattooed on your chest, with his birth year and death year. That's a great idea, a really sweet gesture and keeps his memory alive. Then you go to have sex, and grandpa's there, too.
It's a really good idea, but just make sure you think it all the way through first.

Someone very wise said a tattoo is a permanent reminder of a temporary feeling. Not to say that you wont always love your child with a passion, but do remember when your son is an adult and you are an old man how this might turn out to be not such a good idea. Yeah, you could get removed, but with the money that you spent, your son could have a really nice chunk of cash set aside for something super important. Do your son a true favor and show him how devoted you are by being responsible. Tattoos are great, but you got a lot more to think about than ink.

I am a tattooist and I do these types alot. I personally do not have any problems with tattoos, as I read some people simply do not like them, tattoos are not for evryone.
The facts is you asked where or if you should get this particular tattoo at all?
Well if you decide to get this done it could be a beautiful piece, it will all depend upon your tattooiost skills.
There are alot of talented artist out there, make sure you get one that does portraits if your going to do the portrait of your son!
then it also depends upon the size of this tattoo, anywhere on your back is the usual place for these type of tattoos, you need to make sure that you have enough space to allow the tattoo to breath as time passes.
Having the name added is cool too!

First of all what a beautiful name for your son, and congratulations on becoming a daddy.
I have several tats and started with a small one at 18- I love them, I think they show creativity, individuality and as I have a name on my forearm from my wrist up- it shows someone that I love them very much...however I am now older and wiser and boy do I wish I had stoped to think.
They dont look as good anymore and I wish that I could get rid of some of them (not all).
I have had problems with employment because of them being on show, so you really need to think long and hard before committing to where it is going.
If you decide to have one how about across your shoulders or lower back in a style of old english writing- that will always look nice and you can have a portrait above it, also easily covered or showed off!
I still love them but tatoos are for keeps and if you are unsure about it I would wait a little while longer.
Take care

I love the idea of getting your child's name tattoo on you. I am going to get my sons with a little duck because that was his main theme for his room. As far as on the body I think the between you shoulder blades would be a great area. Also black and gray tattoos are really good for that type of tattoo.

I am so against tattoing any person's name on your body, but since it is your son's name and not a woman's name, i would say that the best place to tattoo his picture along with his name and birthdate would be on your arm.

My friend just got his baby's lil bitty footprints tattooed and it turned out amazing. I would say on your arm and you should go for it, a child is something you will always have and love. Get his name under his footprints, or go ahead and get the portrait done that you want just make sure you choose a good artist for a portrait tattoo, that's the most difficult in my opinion.

i put a bracelet around my wrist with my sons footprints and handprints with an ID band with his initials in it. his birthdate is in one of the footprints and his birthweight is in another. it is small and very colorful and truthfully not many people know that it is a tattoo. my son absolutelly loves that i have his name on me. (he is 6 now) i got it when he was 4. i think that u should definetly get it because even though there r many ways to express ur love to ur child. it isnt like ur son isnt going to be urs forever. it isnt like u r putting some guys name u met in high school on ur body. it is ur son ad it would be a nice tribute to him!!!!

If you are thinking you really want a tattoo, your son's name is nice. It is certainly not something you'd ever want to get rid of :) How about the inside of your wrist? Fact is, it's going to hurt no matter where... Love the name! Congrats on the new boy.
