You need to do what is safe at the time. While I don't necessarily want to there are time on interstate that I feel safer driving 80+ MPH then the speed limit due to the speeds most every one is driving. The bad part of that is if you are in an accident at the high speed it will be more serious, but if you are driving slower you are more likely to be in an accident. I just try to keep track of where cars are around me so if something does happen it gives me a chance to hopefully avoid it or make a move that is better for my safety.
Just remember that you can get a ticket for going to slow, more likely than a ticket going to fast, at least if there are other cars passing you.

On multilane roads (2+ lanes each way) you're right to move with the flow of traffic. Speed is not dangerous; difference of speed is dangerous. Of course not everyone goes the same speed... but be "in the ballpark". To avoid tickets, be slower than most, i.e. be passed more than you pass.
On single lane (each way) roads, drive the speed that feels right to you -- but mind what's behind. If people come up behind you who want to go faster, they WILL find a way to pass you, whether it's safe or not. Make that situation safer by helping them pass in a safe way. For instance on a mountain road there are many, many places called "turnouts" made so slow cars can momentarily pull over and let other cars pass.
For the driving test, just obey the law no matter what. Let the instructor be the one to suggest driving with the flow of traffic.

Go the speed limit as much as possible. Those people passing you will get pulled over much faster if there's a cop around. Also, practicing safe driving will not only help you in the future with insurance costs, but it helps you develope better driving skills in general. When you feel comfortable behind the wheel enough to do what you want, then speed with the rest of them. But I recommend just driving as the law says.

ill admit ive been stuck behind my share of slow drivers in the past but now since ive been driving my current car its not the fastest one in the world what i mean by that is i did a trip up the coast last year and i mostly had to stay in the slow left lane cause most times i couldnt get my revs up and go as fast as say a newer model thats why they made this lane so others can overtake with safety at the end of the day you are going to arrive in one piece alive and so what you might get a dirty look at most who cares your following the speed limit and insuring that you and your passengers live to see another day!!!!

Obey the speed limit. Don't care what other people think. That's the beginning of becoming a bad driver. Your the one who will get the tickets and have there insurance go up.Just because most of the idiots out there drive like a s s holes does not mean you have too.

On your road test, obey the posted limit; after you (hopefully) pass, then you can USUALLY afford to do 10% over the limit as do most other drivers. Of course, that'll still open you up to a speeding citation, but at least you won't get "flipped off" and or endure hard looks from other drivers.

You should go at the speed you are comfortable with that is within the speed limit. If you go over the speed limit you are risking losing your license as you might get a ticket. It doesn't matter if other people think you are slow or not.

Safest speed is the speed of the traffic flow, and you are absolutely right going with it in your normal driving. During your test obey the limit.
I'm just casting my vote here, all the details are already explained by other people who share this view.
