u say Startup tab, and

Startup tab doesn't deal with any boot process, its only deal with the program that u want 2 run automatically after u log on windows (usually u can see them on the system tray, left on clock). so

u can safely uncheck any item of them, but

you shouldn't uncheck ur anti virus program, or messenger if u want auto sign in.

You can try doing a search on the name of the program. If it is a common file (and therefore more likely to be necessary), you should get a lot of results with information about the file.

That said, I think that MSConfig Startup tab hides the important automatic processes. Looking at mine, all the programs listed are non-vital to my system starting up, though obviously certain programs that I want to start up automatically won't. (Such as my antivirus, firewall, and the software for my USB wireless network adapter, something I'd be very sad without!)

So my recommendation would be to systematically turn off one and only one program that you are in doubt about, and then restart your computer. If it was a vitally necessary part of your computing existence, you should know about it fairly soon after your restart, and just have to check the box again. If you use your computer for an hour and don't even notice anything different, leave it unchecked and move on to the next one.

I recommend the use of the Windows startup manager http://www.neosoft-tools.com/windows-startup-manager.htm
It disables any startup programs and fully controls startup by selecting the programs to be launched, while customizing the startup settings (ie how often and when programs should be launched, etc).

Your best bet is to compare what you have on your msconfig list to the database at this website here:

http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php

Remove the ones that appear to be harmful on that site and keep the rest. Good luck!
