I shared a drink with a girl who apparently has it. Would really like to know whether I got it or not. Are there any known symptoms or tests you can do, without going to the doctor?

It takes 4-6 weeks for the symptoms of mono to appear after you've been exposed. Many people who are exposed never get physically sick, so you may be in luck.

Symptoms include a headache, sore throat (often described as "the worst in your life", but I'd argue that), swollen glands in your neck, a deep soreness in your upper abdomen (around your liver or spleen, so it could be on either side), fever, extreme fatigue, and losing your appetite. Not everyone will have all of the symptoms.

Mono is caused by a couple of different viruses. There is a blood test, but it typically only tells you about one kind of virus. Many people test negative on the "mono-spot," even if they have mono. Many other people will be sick for 2-3 weeks before the test becomes positive (before they seroconvert.)

If you get symptoms, your best bet is to see the doctor. They can often make the correct diagnosis without a blood test. Remember, if you have mono, you cannot play contact sports. The risk of rupturing your spleen is high. And yes, that is as bad as it sounds. Best of luck.

I had mono once, and I just recently thought I had it again because I was showing symptoms. When I had it, I felt tired all the time, I just simply had to energy. Also, my neck had a pain in it that wouldn't seem to go away- my doctor told me this was also a symptom. But you're best bet is to just go over to the doctor's office. They just take some blood and you might have to pee in a cup. It's not that bad, and the longer you put it off, the longer you would have mono.

You can be tested for it but the symptoms are general fatigue, fever, weakness, sore throat, swollen tonsils if you have them.
