My teacher gave us a study guide for a test tomorrow, and he put these on it as terms to define. However, he never mentioned any of these ships, and as such, I'm completely lost.

In the months BEFORE the US got involved in the war these ships were all torpedoed by German submarines while escorting merchant ships to Great Britain.

The guy who posted about Pearl Harbor is totally wrong.

The USS Greer was the first US warship to fire on a German U-boat. This incident occurred prior to the start of official US involvement in WWII.

The Kearney and Ruben James were both torpedoed by German U-boats prior to the war. (One of them sunk - I _think_ it was the USS Ruben James but I am not completely sure.)

These ships got out of Pearl harbor during the bombing raids. If they were sunk they would have bottled up the port and we would have lost all ships.
