The date is a real actual date which will occur in the future. It is the winter solstice (the first day of winter).
Will the Mayan calendar end on that date? No, because time and calendars don't end. Will the world end? Probably not--if it does, it won't be because of an archaic count started a thousand years ago which looks into the past to 3114 BCE.
There is a galactic alignment between the sun and the milky way at dawn on that day, but precession moves so slowly (1 degree in 70 years) that essentially we're already in it.

Dec 21, 2012 will occur so long as humanity hasn't managed to obliterate itself in the meantime (after all, if there are no people to keep track of the calendar, then it's meaningless).

I don't think the world is going to end, but I like to tease my sister about it because Dec 21 is her birthday. She will turn 24, and God will get SOOOO mad about it that he will just blow the world up
