I'm past this point in my life, but my daughters coming into it. My question is what normally comes first, hair or body odor? And does 9 seem too young to be thinking about it?

Body odor definitely comes first for most kids, and it often developes BEFORE puberty. Most doctors recommend a NON-aluminum containing deoderant for kids. They actually make a few that are designed for younger kids. Make sure it is plain deoderant, and not antiperspirant, because the antiperspirant isn't good for young children.

As for hair, it starts to grow somewhere around the ages of 10 and 12 for most girls, and it's important to let her dictate the level of hair removal she is comfortable with. Many girls shart shaving as soon as the hair starts growing, and if she wants to do so as well, its a good idea, socially, to go ahead and let her. Adolescent girls can be VERY mean to other girls who don't shave if everyone else is already.

Puberty seems to be developing in children at younger and younger ages. I think 11 is the average age now for girl's periods to start, where it was 12 or 13 when I was a kid, and even older than that for my mother's generation. Some girls start menstruating in elementary school, so since your daughter is 9, it's a good idea to start preparing her for puberty now, so she isn't suprised and scared when it actually happens.

I think the body odor starts first and then comes the hair which really sucks for girls. I don't think 9 seems too you to be thinking about it, better to know first.
