I've been hearing that you can't taste anything when you hold your nose since grade school and I'm pushing 60.

Strange. I can still taste while holding my nose. But, that's just me, I can't answer for anyone else.

If you can't, I say, let go and enjoy the flavor of your food.

Nose has nothing to do with taste which is perceived by taste receptors on tongue. In smokers however I think taste perception is diminished.
