I wouldn't say they are the smartest, but they are very intelligent.
They have been shown to be able to reason through a problem instead of just mimicry behavior. This, in my opinion, shows true intelligence on a level that can only be guessed at.

Yes - they are one of the smartest birds. They are in a family of birds that is thought to be the smartest and includes ravens and magpies and even blue jays. They are thought to be the smartest because they can innovate - think and problem solve on their own better than other bird families.
However, they are illegal to own and wouldn't make good pets (like most wild animals).

Crows, Ravens and other corvids are definitely up there amonst the top birds as far as intelligence goes. There is one Raven being studied in the UK named Betty who uses tools to help her get food. Ravens often use very ingenious methods to get what they want. I have even had one that tried to barter or trade with me in order to get what it wanted. It is true that in most places it is illegal to own a wild bird of any sort, but in my state it is illegal to release any critter that has become humanised. So any baby ravens that I take in are here with me for life. And, if they breed I can legally sell the offspring.

I would say that they are in the top ten smartest birds. Along with crows are ravens, jays, woodpeckers, hawks and falcons.

Id say yes, they are very intelligent, but hey there are quite a few birds that are smart..... I had a rainbow lorikeet once and he used to mimmick every whistle I did and he finally said hello - 3 times one day he was very cheeky too. they say if you split the tongue of a crow it will eventually talk to you.

Yes they are pretty smart, the Jackdaw is another smart bird that can be taught to talk, It is a fallacy that if you split a crows tongue it will talk.

I saw something on Discovery Channel saying that. I think they are...They can build their nests/homes out of garbage or scraps of any material they can find. Either that or I'm mixed up with some other bird.
