Years ago, we had a dog that developed bone cancer, and we finally had to have her put down. That was very hard, but I couldn't stand coming home to an empty house with no sweet dog to greet me, so I went looking at the humane society. I really didn't want a puppy, I wanted a small adult dog already house trained. I had to keep going back every few days for about two weeks, until I finally found a very sweet little Pomeranian. I adopted her right away, and she was the most perfect, wonderful little dog. Yes, absolutely look in the shelters. There are so many nice dogs that need good homes. Just keep looking until you find the one you're looking for. I'm glad I didn't give up, because I would have never found our little dog. We had her for 13 years, she died last summer. When I decide to get another dog, I will definitely go to the Humane Society again.

Don't get a dog from a shelter unless you know how to choose one and can be objective, not falling for the "cute" one who has serious problems. Shelter dogs are neurotic, most coming from abuse or other undesirable living arrangements which give them psychological problems. The one major upside to them is that they are extremely loyal and won't usually try to challenge you, but rather suplicate or realise that you saved them from hell. Newspaper adoption would be your ideal place but it doesn't make sense to me why you wouldn't want a puppy. Most people don't properly train their dogs and whoever is getting rid of one is doing it for a reason. If you have a properly trained Great Dane and live in a one bedroom appartment, but take it out everyday at least 2x a day, letting it run in a park, you wouldn't get rid of the dog because you don't have "enough room" to keep it. Small dogs really have no excuse to be gotten rid of. There are exceptions but be very careful when taking someone else's dog. Ask if the dog ever bit anyone unexpectedly or unprovoked and broke the skin. This is very important. Also I wouldn't recommend a dog who growls or challenges you if you go near it while it's eating. I had a Doberman and a Pon (died 6 months ago :-.....) and each dog I would be able to get on my knees while it was eating, put my head next to its head, and bump it aside from its foodbowl without incident. My friend's dog was HORRIBLY trained (it everntually attacked her grandmother and put her in the hospital, the warning signs were all there, they gave the dog to a shelter lol, that's what kind of dogs go there) and if you went near it while it was eating, it would growl not in an annoyed way but in a "my next step is to bite you very hard" type way. This is one of the best tests if you want a safe dog (!!!DO NOT TRY THIS TEST ON A SHELTER PITBULL OR OTHER DANGEROUS DOG UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING!!!). Learn more before you get a dog, volunteer at a shelter for a day or even just a few hours a week and get an idea of what dogs are like. My sister just got a puppy mill inbred/overbred mother dog and I hate it. It is stupid, untrainable, neurotic, and overall it sucks (thank god she keeps it at her appartment most of the time). Hope that helps.

A shelter is a great place to go for a dog of any age! A decent shelter will have tested their adoptable dogs for medical issues, as well as temperament. They will allow you to see the dog, interact with it, and will be able to tell you any quirks the dog may have. They will often allow you to take the dog home on a "trial basis", in case you're unsure.
You can also try www.petfinder.com for adoptable dogs. You should definitely look into both options. It's a great way to save a dog's life while giving yourself a loving friend for life. Good luck!

Shelters are really the best place to go.
The mid-aged or elder dogs are usually the ones to be euthanized first unfortunitly. I spend a lot of my free time at the local animal control facility, helping take blood for heart worm testing, and vaccinating them.
I can tell you, shelter babies are some of the best dogs ever, sweet and loving...just need a chance.
Also try rescue groups.
They are a wonderful alternative, they have a lot of dogs in foster care just waiting to be taken home by someone.

that's a thoroughly subjective label. there is not any definitive source or regulation on what makes a dogs medium, great, substantial, or small. in the experience that your landlord would not enable dogs over 35lbs, then it rather is her determination. exhibiting her an internet site that it is not a "great" dogs could desire to no longer replace her ideas. in many circumstances, 35lbs is seen a medium sized dogs. yet back, it rather is her determination. lots puppy friendly residences have length limits of 35lbs or decrease than. Many are even below that. despite if or no longer you settle is irrelevant.

try your local humane society. most of the dogs they get are owner released, owner moved or allergic. they check for behavioral and health problems. most are already spayed/neutered. ages can vary between puppies to seniors. the only downfall is if it was a stray, then they guesstimate at the age of the dog. some places even have a occassional pure bred. also check local rescue groups like greyhound rescue.

Shelters are a great place to find dogs. You can also check with your vet because many families put their dogs up for adoption when they can no longer keep them.
Some breeders also have adult dogs for sale that won't be bred anymore.
Good luck!
