undue the fuel lines, take out the 2 mounting bolts and remove, reverse to install, if you have a hard time putting it in, crank the engine over a little

I agree for the most part with what was posted. However, I wouldn't stick your finger in there while some one bumps the starter. Also, the fuel pump shaft rides on a cam that rides on the cam, it does not actually ride on a cam shaft lobe. The lifters are the only things that ride on the cam shaft lobes. When you go to install the new pump it will be obvious how to install it, don't worry about the cam orientation. Also be sure to replace your fuel filter when you replace your pump, unless of course you recently changed it.

My question is did you narrow your problem down to the fuel pump? Im curious what the symptoms are....could be a carb issue or possibly vapor lock.

the pump is simple to change . Just disconnect the metal fuel lines, remove the two bolts and pull the pump out.

scrape the gasket residue off the pump and engine. Now, take this next step slow and cautiously.have some one get into the car. carefully put your finger in the hole, looking for the cam shaft lobe that contacts the pumps long handle.
hove some one, bump the engine, till that lobe is all the way to the top.
insert new pump , gasket beplace the bolts and fuel tubes.

It is very important, that the cam loab is all the way up. If not, when the cam starts turning, and that lobe is not in the right spot, there will be damage to the pump's handle. and maybe the cam loab, that operates the fuel pump.
