the chicken, because:
1) the egg (or chick for that matter) could not survive without a parent
2) God created the chicken as an adult
3) if the egg came first, then the rooster would have to be there at the same time... and where would a rooster get an egg? a chicken!

The chicken or the egg question is really a religon vs science question.
Religous people will say that the chicken was created and thus the chicken came first.
Scientists believe that a cousin of the chicken and a deformed, mutated, egg which gave birth to the rise of chickens.

This questions can also be solved very simply if said jokingly.
The egg comes first, because you eat eggs for breakfeast and chicken for dinner :P

It depends. If you go to the wikipedia link below, read it and try to look at both sides of the dilemma.

The true answer, however, found in the CNN link below, is that the egg came first.

As quoted,

"Put simply, the reason is down to the fact that genetic material does not change during an animal's life.

Therefore the first bird that evolved into what we would call a chicken, probably in prehistoric times, must have first existed as an embryo inside an egg.

Professor John Brookfield, a specialist in evolutionary genetics at the University of Nottingham, told the UK Press Association the pecking order was clear.

The living organism inside the eggshell would have had the same DNA as the chicken it would develop into, he said.

"Therefore, the first living thing which we could say unequivocally was a member of the species would be this first egg," he added. "So, I would conclude that the egg came first." "

I hope this helps.

neither. im guessing(keyword) that the modern day chicken evolved(genetic mutation) from another similar species. technically i guess it would be the egg, although that specific egg would not really be a "chicken", it would just be what ever species it was, just with genetic mutations that was actually beneficial to the species, so even with science that question is still somewhat of a quandry.
