My cat has really long, black and fluffy hair. During summer he lays around inside or outside in the shade too hot to do anything. He's usually very active in other seasons

I have two maine coone cats that I have shaved in a lion cut for summer and they love it. They are so happy to have all that fur off of them in the california summers.

If his fur gets badly tangled or matted, you might end up having to do it anyway. Poor kitty ... :-(

It would probably be OK, but asking the vet first would be a good idea. A friend of mine had a Persian cat, started giving him a "summer haircut" every year, and he (the cat) seemed much happier for it. As long as you don't trim off so much fur that the cat gets sunburned, it shouldn't hurt him any.

I should add that my friend with the Persian had been a professional haircutter for many years, so she knew **exactly** what she was doing when she gave her cat his summer trims. If you're not in the same position she was, take your cat to a groomer. Wishing you and your cat good luck ...

It is not cruel to shave your cat in the summer. My mother has shaved her cats for the past 5 years without harmful affects. The difficultly comes when trying to find a groomer that will do it. Many groomers these days will not even work on a cat, because cats can be extremely violent during the process. In fact, most Vets that offer grooming services will issue a sedative first.

Hope this helps.

Cats do not need to be shaved or trimmed, generally, unless there is something medically wrong with them (such as a disorder). Check with your vet to see if there's anything he suggests, but I wouldn't be too worried about it. It sounds like your cat is long haired and these cats can get weighed down during that kind of weather, but it's normal again.

The biggest thing you can do is make sure he has plenty of cold drinkable water available at all times, especially in the hot summertime.

Sometimes you do need to trim the fur of long-haired cats - especially the fur near their butts becuase they tend to get poo and stuff stuck there. Its OK to trim the cats fur a bit. But long haired breeds tend to shed in the spring and the new fur that they grow for the hot weather tend not to be as long nor as thick as their winter coat.

My cats layed around in and out the house all year round and I never cut anything off.. nor added anything. Usually they need enough hair in the summer for a skin protection from the sun and enough in the winter for warmth.. and only the Cat God knows exactly how much is enough...

The long haired cats I knew lay in the sun, but they looked almost dead. I don't think they took good care for them, I would get them groomed and keep them active.

NO!!! Absolutely not unless you want an ugly cat. The cat will not get over-heated unles it stays outside all the time and it also depends on how hot it gets where you live.

its not good to cut their hair because it also keeps them cool in the summer but i dont consider it cruel only if you know the cat wont like it
