My maltese puppy died after only having him seven days. He had an upset tummy and despite a Vet visit and some medication, he sadly passed away this morning. The vet seems perplexed as to why my pup died, he was horrible and I will never use him again. As a new puppy owner, I brought him to the Vet out of concern for vomiting and diarrhea and he chalked it up to stress in a new home and gave me medicine to calm his tummy. Now that I have a break in bawling my eyes out, my concern is turned to my two cats. I bleached down the floors. My cats seem fine, should I be concerned something may be transferred to them?

Some mention Parvo - but the pup didn't have a fever and his diarrhea, while not smelling like roses, certainly did not smell awful.

I can't think of anything that your puppy may have had that would affect your cats..I raised Persian cats, and dogs for many years together. We even had parvo in our home, and it didn't ever affect the cats...I think that about all they share is parasites.and fungus.

To start, I'm very sorry for your loss. Young Maltese often suffer from hypoglycemia, and Maltese can also suffer from liver shunts and other digestive/glandular illnesses which can present with vomiting/diarrhea. I'm sorry your vet was not helpful to you. My suggestion would be to contact the breeder you purchased the puppy from and find out whether or not any of your puppy's littermates were also ill. I would also take the cats to a different vet just for a check-up to make sure they are fine. Most contagious illnesses in pets cannot be spread between cats and dogs, as they are prone to different ailments and most are not spread through air or surface contact, but through bodily fluids. The exceptions are things like rabies and encephalitis, which are pretty rare in household pets. Follow up with the vet and the breeder, and just keep an eye on the cats for a while. Hope this helps! Again, I'm very sorry for your loss.

Vomiting and diarrhea sounds like Parvo. It can take down a pup in just a couple days. One good indicator of it is if the diarrhea stinks to high heaven! If it is parvo then it can live anywhere the dog touched for years unless sanitized. If the pup went outside and defecated then it can live upwards of 4 years in the soil.

That said, your cats should be fine if they are adults and are up to date on their shots. But before introducing any new pet to the house, make sure they have their shots before ever bringing them home. Nothing is worse than seeing a train of pets killed off by a seemingly "clean" environment :(
