Equi cisium sed non fossam vitare poterant?

The horses were able to avoid the cabriolet (a light two-wheeled vehicle of some sort), but not the ditch.

Equi - nominative plural of equus (horse) - subject

cisium and fossam - accusative singular of cisium (cabriolet - don't ask, it's dictionarese) and fossa (ditch) - direct objects

vitare - present infinitive of vito, -are (avoid) - complementary infinitive with poterant

poterant - 3rd person plural imperfect active indicative of possum, posse (be able to) - main verb

sed non - but not (sed a conjunction between cisium and fossam, non an adverb that negates vitare in the case of fossam - i.e. the horses were able to avoid the light wagon, but they weren't able to avoid the ditch)

*note: never, ever go to one of these translating sites. They're never right. The ones these two guys gave you translate the sentence as: "Indeed cisium but not ditch life poterant". And this is very simple Latin. How much do you think they'd screw up a complex sentence?
