Check out www.livecdlist.com. Over 300 live CDs. Start with a couple of small distros, Damm small linux, Puppy linux, Slax, download the ISOs and burn as image to CD. Boot from the CD and see what you can do with an OS that is under 100 mg. Then try out some of the larger distros. If you run into any problems check with the distros forum. It's an easy and fun way to learn. Good luck and enjoy.

Yes, that is entirely possible but not with just any variety of Linux. One Linux program that is very popular that will run "live" without installing it on the hard drive, is kubuntu. They will send you the CD for free if you go to www.kubuntu.org
If you are used to installing Windows, try Kubuntu because:
1. With Kubuntu, you can get online in 5 minutes from a blank hard drive. That will take hours with Windows.
2. With Windows you will need to constantly try to prevent 114,000 virii. Kubuntu does not get those virii.
3. Kubuntu hard drives need no defragmenting.
4. There is no hassel of activating the product.
5. Unlike Vista, Kubuntu is compatable with much more software and hardware.
6. Kubuntu is much more stable and does not require a reboot frequently for updates or software installs.
7. Kubuntu is not only free, but it has much other free software with it, that Microsoft would charge hundreds of extra dollars for, such as open office.
8. You can give Kubuntu CD's to your friends or burn them if you like without doing anything illegal..in fact it is encouraged.

Yes you can do this by downloading and burning the cd image for a Live version of Linux. LiveCD versions of the OS allow it to be run from the optical drive. Of course all setting changes will be lost when you log off and although a harddrive isnt necessary its helpful for saving files.

you should do a community deploy, yet which will in all probability be lots extra complicated than you will in all probability want. are you able to not basically spend $20-30 on a DVDchronic? Hell, you will detect a DVD author for $17 on ebay perfect now.

Get UBUNTU or XUBUNTU. If you decide to install it read the WIKI starter guide and do a dual boot with your current operating system.
Back up your data before making any changes to your operating system.

PCLinuxOS provides by far the best live CD, which is compatible with a very wide range of hardware. It does everything that Kubuntu does and more, and the forum is busy and friendly. Come over to http://www.pclinuxos.com - you'll be very welcome! :)
