I'm planning to get rid of the cactus, but was wondering if there's any reason not to.
Among the cuttings, were two new growths. I kept one to paint it, and might give the ohter to a friend, who paints.

Since this posting, I have worked to get rid of the cactus, and it's now gone. Anyone know a website I can go to, to find out what kind it was?

I believe that the Opuntia (Prickly Pear) is used for antipyretic, anti-inflammatory and analgesic purposes. Maybe that's what type of cactus you have. Opuntia engelmannii is the most common. The first website link below has lots of info and pictures. The second shows some uses for cacti.
