16Now a man came up to Jesus and asked, "Teacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life?"
17"Why do you ask me about what is good?" Jesus replied. "There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, obey the commandments."
18"Which ones?" the man inquired.
Jesus replied, " 'Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony, 19honor your father and mother,'[d] and 'love your neighbor as yourself.'[e]"
20"All these I have kept," the young man said. "What do I still lack?"
21Jesus answered, "If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me."
Is Jesus telling us we must obey the commandments to have eternal life? ( I assume he means the 10 commandments)
Why are the commandments even mentioned by Jesus when indeed Jesus is saying you can not have eternal life by works or worldly riches?

I think Jesus was challenging his heart. From the start, the man´s question was wrong. No one can do enough good things to "earn" heaven. Only by faith in Christ can we enter into heaven (see Acts 16:30-31, Romans 3:21-24, Ephesians 2:8). So I think Jesus was testing him. When he asked him to give up his possessions, he knew that was a sore spot for the man. That´s what he loved more than Jesus. It was a heart issue.
Of course, James talks about faith showing itself through works, and Paul discusses how because we are forgiven doesn´t mean we should sin more. We should still try to follow the commandments and live well, but ultimately, we only get to heaven through Christ.

In Matthew 19:16-17, Jesus was speaking to a Lawyer who was self-righteous since he wanted to put Jesus to the test (Luke 10:25). He asked what he must do in order to obtain eternal life and Jesus responded with the requirements of keeping the commandments. If a person keeps all of the commandments, it would seem that they could obtain eternal life. However, nobody can keep all of the commandments. Therefore, Jesus' comments to this man show this man that justification can only be by faith since no one can keep all of the commandments. This is why it says in Eph. 2:8 that we are saved by grace through faith.

hm. Interesting question. One impression that I always got, when I was growing up, in my bible education at several different churches, was that the Lord had a pet peeve about people who did all kinds of good works in public, but didn't really "walk the walk". An example would be people who had plenty of riches to spare, and could be seen conspicuously giving to the poor, (in the public eye) but if it came down to giving up all they owned, giving all of it to the poor, and living thier lives simply and for the spirit, they weren't doing things like that, and what good works they did do were more to look good in the eyes of men, than in the eyes of God. I think the Lord sought to put this man to the test, and was telling him that for the enrichment of his spirit, and ultimate enlightenment, that he must let go of his attachment to worldly things, and this would include not only giving up his worldly goods to the poor, but also a worldly attachment to doing good works for the eyes of men, as he would no longer have wealth to offer conspicuously in public. Does that make sense?

Jesus is saying that if you wish to follow Him follow the commandments. If you love Him follow the commandments. Faith without works is dead. Part of those works is following the commandments

God said in his word "take up your cross and follow me". To serve God to the most and get the heavenly inheiritance God asks that you give him your all. Money, in this parable, shows us that even in finances he wants us to trust him. Keep God's commandments but he asks that you give him your life (trusting in him in every situation, battle, and circumstance; giving your time to God and putting him above all else). He purchased you with the full price, His only Son's blood. That was more than enough. God is asking that you make him Lord and Savior of you life and to live your life out in faith in him. The 10 commandments are very important, don't discredit them, but those are just the base commands of what is said in the NT. Above all else love your neighbor as he has loved you, seek God diligently and he will reward you, and complete his will for your life with faith.

The Mayans did not understand, and nowhere has it been got here across that they even envisioned 2012 to be the top of the international. The Mayans used a calender that coincided with alignments in stars. you understand, Leo formation and such.. besides, the Mayans had properly envisioned the position those alignments will be, for this reason they could properly predict the position they could be for hundreds of years. The Mayan civilization become both demolished, or merely merely broke aside. Who is conscious of. that they had envisioned those alignments each and each of ways up till the year 2012, till in spite of got here about to them..got here about. Then comes alongside some wackjob to create some nonsense about some BS nonsense. Then the historic previous Channel comes alongside to extra propagate this nonsense..

If one does not have a willing spirit to uphold the royal law they shall never achieve righteousness in the eyes of the Lord.
Matthew 5:17
Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill.
James 2:26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

Jesus Christ did not abolish the Ten Commandments. He simplified and summarized it through the two great commandments: love of God and neighbor.

Because both faith and works are required for salvation.
The only reason salvation remains a free gift of God is because God IS God, and no one can force God to do anything.
Those who attempt to totally discount the necessity of works are guilty of ignoring the specific words of Christ, as spoken in several different portions of the gospels.
Faith without works is dead, and dead faith typically is not salvific.
Once a person has been baptized, their good works are the fruit, and the proof, of their faithful conversion to Christ.
No good works ... probably little or no faith.
No faith ... no salvation.
No kidding!
