that if they don't keep there dogs regularly dewormed I don't want my kids near them or in their yard? I just found out they don't keep their dogs dewormed regularly or have them checked regularly on top of they don't have them up to date on their shots. I don't want my kids to get worms because they won't take care of their dogs. I don't know what to do this bothers me. I also don't want my puppy around their dogs so she doesn't get sick or worms. Should I be upset that they don't take responsibility for their dogs? How do i tell them this?

The only shots they keep them up to date on are their rabies shots. Sorry forgot to mention that..

Good news I spoke to my husband about this and he agrees. Altho i don't know if he is going to speak to them we think since we found out our puppy already has a tape worm they are going to get their dogs wormed since they have been around her. As for us and the kids we are going to the Dr. to get checked for worms. We have decided that if they won't get them wormed we will buy the product and give it to them to do. Hopefuly this will make them realize that as pet owners they must take responsibility for their dogs and the health of the people who are in contact with them. Thanks everyone for your help.

Is it possible that you already have animosity with your in-laws? The relationship sounds on shaky ground. I think you need a level head on this one.
There could be reasons for their lapse of vet care for the dogs. They could be on a fixed income, or they could be forgetful....why don't you speak to your husband..calmly. Remember, you would get offended if someone spoke meanly to your parents.
Have your husband offer to take the dogs to the vet...or help them to do it. There is no point in starting a 'war' with people that you can expect to be sharing your life with. Take a positive approach.
I have 'been there, done that", and I have had problems when I was first married with young kids. My in-laws and I now have a good relationship...because of what my own mother said:
"When you married your husband, you married into his family...Your husband's parents love him as much as I love you..so treat them with respect and understanding, you are not a teenager anymore."
It is hard, to come out of the anger you are feeling...I understand. But try to for the sake of your kids. The fighting will affect them more then a couple of dog's health status.
Be strong, and be wise...your a good mother, try to show your kids of grown-ups act properly when there is a problem.
Good Luck!!

tough subject BUT imo approach the one of the in laws you get along best and mention the non worming issue you would also do well to drop in that the worms live in the soil for AGES and should your babies fall, get the soil etc let alone the poop in their eyes there is a VERY VERY real chance of said child losing sight
I had to hold down my 3 1/2 old cos he fell into some cat poop [NOT even my bloody animal] and they had to do some major stuff to his eyes at the er, he is almost 19 and I still feel sick at what went on in the er that day..................
If they can deal with the worms issue I would not sweat the other stuff too much..but I thought BY LAW they had to have their rabies shots???
Regards and good luck

If you'd keep shoes on the kids and don't let them eat the poop they come across in your in-laws yard it's doubtful they'll get worms. And as for the shots as long as the rabies shot is up to date you need'nt worry about the kids catching anything from the dogs.I'd be more concerned about what the dogs would catch from your kids.

You should definitely be worried. Your kids are the up most importance, and it's great that your worried. The best thing to do, would probably be to tell them in a nice way why your worried, and ask them to please deworm their dogs. Since they've had kids of their own, they should understand why your worried. If that doesn't work, than don't let them play at your inlaws house until they do deworm their dogs.

That must be tough I would be nice about it and tell them that some dieses can spread from dog to dog especially if their dogs are not vaccinated. As for the kids when you visit don't let them play in the yard where the in laws dog are. Hopefully your in laws will get the hint

I'd ask your vet, but I don't think your kids can get worms from the dogs. I could be wrong. But I'd leave my puppy at home.
They won't take kindly to you telling them how to raise their dogs. If they aren't taking care of them to your satisfaction, you could subtly tell them about the things you do for your dog and why. But if you're obvious about it, they'll be offended.
Wouldn't you if someone told you, "I won't let my kids play with your kids because you " ?

Just tell them that their dogs could die or become extremely sick if not dewormed or kept up to date on their shots. You have every right to be angry with them, they aren't taking care of their babies, it's like not taking you to the doctor when you were little to get your shots and antibiotics.

Upfront and honest is the best way.
The chance of your children getting worms from the dogs is low but it is an honest fear. They can respect your wishes for the safety of your children or they will take offense. Either way this situation is one that can only be handled through honesty.

Keep your puppy away from these dogs. There are other viruses that can be spread to your puppy, that your children cannot get, that could be potentially fatal. If the kids are around the dogs, make sure they are not licked.
