If he goes and gets a degree and transfers to become an officer.

But I don't think that these days aside from maybe the rarest of circumstances that enlisted men can become commissioned by working their way up.

As mentioned below, an Enlisted can become an Army Officer. However, It is a lot harder route than in the times of Chestey Puller to make General Officer grade.

They need to have a College Degree
The need to be accepted to the US Army Officer Candidate School and graduate in order to get their commission.
They must then progress through the Officer ranks and complete the subsequent advanced courses required as part of Officer Development.

The Army OCS website is here.

No, the highest you can achienve as an enlisted man is Sgt Major of the Army [only 1 man has this title], Command Sgt Major, or Sgt Major, ann are grade E-9. If you want to be a general, you have to go to OCS and begin with being a 2LT, and work your way up.

Yes, if they go the "Green to Gold" route and recieve a commission as an officer and then climg through the ranks. A general is a commissioned officer and is not considered amoung the enlisted ranks. The enlisted "equivalent" would be a Command Sergeant Major.

Oh sure, there have many Generals who went on to become Generals after being an enlisted man. The one that stands out most in my mind was Gen Chesty Puller USMC. I was an enlisted man and moved up to Temp Major and back to CWO. There are lots of them, mostly WW2 men.

Read a biography of Colin Powell.

He started out as a draftee private. He retired as the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (In other words - the highest ranking officer in the US military.) Later he became the Secretary of State.

Personally, I am annoyed at Clinton for not giving the man a 5th star.

Anyone who says no to your inquiry is wrong.
And, anyone who says it unlikely is correct.

All services offer programs for enlisted members to move into the officer corp but unless you are a military academy graduate those stars are very hard to get...

It is possible, through either going to school while in the military and getting a degree, or by going through Officer Candidate School (OCS). It does not happen often, however.
