Many digital cams are recognized by Windows XP without doing anything. If not, then the cam comes with software to install so the pc will recognize the cam (drivers).
When you plug the USB cable into the cam and the pc, be sure then to turn on the cam. Now you should be able to go to Windows, Explore and see the cam as another "drive". Then you can drill down to find the cam's card and the files that are your pictures.

The best way of transferring pics from digital cam to PC is by using a USB card reader or the built-in card reader of your PC. Just remove the memory card from your cam and plug it into the card reader. It's easy and convenient.
