Your cat may be trying to trim his claws. Cats need to scratch to keep their toenails from growing into their foot pads. Look at them and if they are too long, they may need you to cut them. Easy to do. If nails are ok, and Cat has a scratching post, maybe he just likes the sounds or feel of the tub. They all have very different personalities. If he is ok and not harming the tub finish...let him do it. Best wishes. Second thought, maybe he would like to use the tub for a litter box???

if he does it after some one took a shower or something it's because the inside of the tub is warm. my cat likes to lick the water off the tub floor after i shower, i offer her water from a dish but she prefers being in the tub

if it is a kitten it is probly just playing if u adopted her or something when she might have hade another owner there might have been something to do with the bath tub with the old owner it may be habit also that is all I really know though

Generally when they are taking a leak or dump in the tub... Have you tinkled in the tub?? He may be trying to cover up your scent!!

yeah, they like to leave their marks on it so they have proof and scent on it to show its theirs to other animals.
