Sounds like it's most likely a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) and these do NOT go away on their own. Your dog needs to be checked by your vet as soon as possible. UTIs are painful and can develop into conditions that are far worse than just the infection itself, which will cost you WAY more in the long-run than just taking the dog to a vet now.
Good luck!

My dogs are 13 and 15 and they often take awhile to empty their bladders - maybe that just depends on how long they hold it?
Anyway - blood in the urine means there is something wrong. It could be a bladder infection, bladder stones, prostate problems, etc. Any of these problems will need treatment by a vet and will get worse without treatment, so I recommend taking the dog in and having testing done to see if there really is blood present in the urine and, if so, what the cause is. Better be safe than sorry.
I really wanted to say what "Due in July" said, but I'm trying to keep my cool and be helpful. Take the dog to the vet though, please!

You need to get him to the vet a.s.a.p. You shouldn't have let this go on for "several months". Come on, if you are a pet owner, you can tell when something just isn't normal, and when something is painful..Please spend the $$ and get him some help. He's probably got blood in his urine which could be caused by several things, but he needs attention immediately. If you've ever had a bladder or urinary tract infection, you would know how horribly painful they can be~

No matter how hard you try to keep from going you need to go to the vet. Unless your dog has an uncanny liking for beets, your poor pup has blood in his urine. It could be any number of things (most of which can be cured with simple antibiotics) such as a bladder infection, UTI, Kidney infection, kidney stone, it could be cancerous. Because he is straining I would bet on the kidney stones or the Urinary Tract Infection. With antibiotics he shoud be better in a few days.

You cannot avoid the vet in this situation and waiting for several months as you have is not an option. He is having problems that will become more serious. Have a heart....take him in pronto.

Yes, this is serious. He probably has a bladder and/or kidney infection. He needs to be seen by a vet!
