Ipecac has been used by individuals with bulimia nervosa and anorexia nervosa as a means to lose weight. Repeated abuse is believed to cause damage to the heart, which can ultimately result in the user's death.[4] The death of singer Karen Carpenter in 1983 has been popularly attributed to her abuse of ipecac for weight control. Ipecac has also been used by emetophiliacs, people who find vomit sexually arousing.

If your friend is using it for non-medical purposes, she could be bullimic, which yes, is serious. You should try asking her about her problem and whether or not she has self-esteem issues. Does she ever put her self down?Does she seem sort of withdrawn? These and the ipecac are tell-tae signs. Ipecac can be dangerous if used that often because it makes you vomit and continuing to use it gets the body in a routine of throwing up. Also, all the stomach acid in her throat will wear away the skin in there, making her more likely to get sick.

Ipecac should not be used frequently because there is strong evidence it could damage the heart. Not to mention the fact that vomiting frequently can eat away at the esophogus. Most importantly, it's frequent use indicates that your friend is bulimic, and needs help. Bulimia is a very serious disorder with grave consequences. You should speak to your friend seriously about this, and offer to help her find professional help.
