There is a bunch of stuff you need to do. Start by filing a dispute with each of the credit reporting agencies, Equifax, Experian and TransUnion, on each item that is not yours. They can put a fraud alert on your file so no one will open any more charge cards.

Unfortunately, it's going to be a mess for a while and you also might want to get a copy of your earnings from Social Security and find out if someone has been using your SS number to work. There was a lady in California last year that got slapped with an IRS bill for thousands of dollars on earnings she supposedly made in Texas. She had never even been to Texas.

You're going to have to be proactive on this to clear your name. I'm posting a couple links for you. One to the FTC website giving you things to do in the case of ID theft and one for Social Security to request your earnings statement.

I wish I had good news for you. That woman in California was still trying to clear stuff up two years later and still wasn't finished.

I hope this helps.

First thing's first...call the police and report an identity theft. File a report, do whatever they have you do first. Then start figuring out which things on your credit report are fraudulent and call the credit bureaus. Tell them that you have been a victim of identity theft and give them the police report number or even fax them the whole report. Start there and don't be afraid to ask questions when you talk to the police and to the credit bureaus.

Contact your nearest social security office to get replacement social security card and then contact the three major credit reporting agencies and report it. They can investigate the matter and can sometimes remove incorrect information. You might even benefit by contacting the local police department to explain your situation and they may also be able to direct you to appropriate agencies that can help with fraud.
