To get enough sleep, though that depends on what time you have to get up in the morning

Well, the answer about how much sleep above is a good half of the answer right there, so I won't repeat it.

The reason 8 pm is cited in various articles and such is because, in your usual temperate zones, this is "full dark." Sleep is affected by the general cycles of light and dark you are exposed to, and by going to sleep when it naturally gets dark rather than prolonging the day with exposure to bright electric light, you will in theory get a better night's sleep.

There are a lot of studies out there right now on sleep. You'll often read things about "sleep hygiene," which covers things like caffeine intake, light exposure, room temperature, etcetera.

“...one of the most significant and overlooked public health problems...is that many adults are chronically sleep deprived, [and] most people who are sleep deprived do not even realize it.”
- American Psychological Association

Infants - About 16 hours per day of sleep

Babies and toddlers - From 6 months to 3 years: between 10 and 14 hours per day. Young children generally get their sleep from a combination of nighttime sleep and naps. See: How Much Sleep Is Enough for My Child?, especially for tips on shaping nighttime awakenings in young children.

Children
* Ages 3 to 6: between 10 and 12 hours of sleep
* Ages 6 to 9: about 10 hours of sleep
* Ages 9 to 12: about 9 hours of sleep

Teenagers - About 9 hours of sleep per night. Teens have trouble getting enough sleep not only because of their busy schedules, but also because they are biologically programmed to want to stay up later and sleep later in the morning, which usually doesn’t mesh with school schedules.

My mother didn't have a set time for us. It was usually by 10 if tired at 8 we went to bed then. You decide what is best for your child. If you need to get the kid up early and s/he won't get up or are cranky you put them to bed earlier.

To get the sleep needed to be healthy. And to give mommy and daddy some time to enjoy each other so they can still be a couple.

I have no idea. My 3 year old goes to bed about 10pm. According to his doctor, he gets enough sleep (since he gets up about 7:30am & naps daily).
