Seems to me it's the far Christian Republicans who are killing people in the name of a sweet Jesus at present... why do so many of them want to kill people all the time? Do you think they are motivated by mindless fear? Are they relishing in their sadistic tendencies?
Is it not a rejection of Jesus to want to kill lots and lots of people?

Being an atheist liberal maybe I can answer your question. I do not belief without proof. There is no evidence of God, or of Jesus being any more than a crazy mortal man. I belief that Jesus was a human being that was a moral and just man that had a great following, but that's as far as I will agree to.
Religion mutters clear thinking and is causing horrific suffering and death on a daily basis. As an atheist I am a moral and good person, without the the threat of hell. I want nothing but peace on earth and the end of human suffering. Religion gives people another reason to fight and argue, only God is intangible, so it seems utterly ridiculous to fight over.

I think it is a stereotype that Liberals reject Jesus. There are plenty of people who reject Jesus that aren't Liberals and vice versa. I was raised Roman Catholic and I believe in the Holy Trinity. However, I believe that God's rule and Man's rule are different. I am considered socially Liberal and sometime fiscally liberal. Socially, religious conservatives blast my views, but there this is a two-way street. Just as religious conservatives can't believe that I can believe in Jesus and believe in a woman's right to choose, I can't believe how a religious conservative who believes in Jesus can be for the death penalty.
In addition, many fiscal Liberals hopeful aim is to help those who cannot help themselves -- something that is at the heart of what Jesus taught. For me, Jesus strove to teach compassion, compassion for all those living, no matter what choices they make, no matter who they are or what they believe. And that is a pretty overpowering lesson, don't you think?

I have seen that observation a lot on here, but I don't know it from my own experience.
Nonetheless, If it is true, I think the so-called liberal is in a man must help man mode, while the so-called conservative is in a God helps everybody mode.
I am a Catholic and I am "liberal" on most, but not all, issues. In view of the Pope's stance on war, poverty, opposition to capital punishment, treating all with justice and respect, I can't see why this Church is so labelled
"conservative".
However, on matters such as the role of traditional religion, and most sexual issues, we Catholics ARE considered conservative.
ADDED: But Shannon, (and some others): you have clearly explained your rationale for atheism, but not why it ties in with "liberalism".

ok, I am not afraid of some mystical being....that's stupid. AND< I do not live in sinful behavior!! I may do some things that the Bible says is wrong, like work on Sunday....but I do not relish sin. Far left liberals can be just as moral as Christians....

I think the primary reason is pride. We are all like to feel that we are good people; especially when we compare ourselves to rapists, murderers, and other people that we perceive as really bad.
The Bible says there is "none that do good, no not one" (Psalm 14:3, Psalm 53:3, and Romans 3:12). It is very hard to humble ourselves before God and admit that we are not as lovable as we think we are. It doesn't make sense to some people that Jesus took the punishment that was rightfully ours.

Liberalism wants the government to save humanity, that's why there is so much effort to have government-funded everything. Socialism and Communism also wanted the people to totally and completely rely on government, and it wasn't until WW2 that the Russian government allowed churches to exist.
The far left is trying to remove the idea of God so they can be God, just like the USSR did.
The far right (at least the crazy ones) want to remove the idea of God's forgiveness, just like Europe did when the Pope got political power and burned people at the stake for wanting a Bible in their own language. Like condemming gay people to hell, instead of telling them that God loves them and can help them not go to hell, just like he helped us.
My sin is just as bad as anyone elses, and Jesus forgave me, he can forgive anyone who repents and asks him for help.
What i want to know is this; Why does the Government need to step in all the time? Weren't Christians called to help the poor? Those in need? i know that during Katrina there were many church groups helping the victims, and some probably did a better job than the government, but why aren't churches and Christians known for that. Why does it take a tragedy like that to make us Christians do anything?? i try to help in an inner-city church that gives away clothes and food, and i support kids in Compassion International (an organization that lets people sponsor kids that suffer in a third-world enviroment and give them food and education)
But a lot of the time i feel that's not enough. If we could be what Jesus called us to be, the government wouldn't need to come and help as much as it does.

Stop with the political propaganda. I don't know any Liberals that summarily reject Jesus. In fact, most Liberals espouse Christian values much better than Conservatives, i.e. giving to the poor, loving your neighbor, judging not, etc.
Atheists, on the other hand, do reject Jesus. But that is not a political platform. Atheists can be fiscal and social Conservatives or Liberals.

Why do you think they all do? I'm atheist and Buddhist and I don't reject Jesus... oh and I'm liberal too... I just don't believe in any of the mythological characteristics many have tacked onto the man... I believe he was a completely wise, altruistic teacher... which, most of his teachings nobody listens to anyway while they're busy point fingers at everybody else, judging them, hating, etc. instead of trying to cultivate the same wisdom and altruism that HE taught.
