A number of recent studies have shown that antioxidants like procyanidins found in red wine can reduce the risk of heart disease. Polyphenols like resveratrol also have been touted as protective against heart disease and cancer. The studies use a variety of red wines, so in theory this should apply to all red wines, rather than any specific variety.

However, one should keep a few things in mind:

1) If a person doesn't already enjoy a social drink now and then, they shouldn't start drinking just for the supposed health benefits. The benefits are probably overstated.
2) Studies with resveratrol used mice. In order for a human being to ingest an amount of resveratrol equivalent to the dose the mice got in the trials, that person would have to drink an insane volume of wine.
3) Benefits from the antioxidants are counteracted by the adverse effects of alcohol on the liver, cholesterol profile, and blood pressure. So, there is a point at which, depending on the amount and frequency of drinking, more harm than good is done.
4) The safe limit for healthy, social drinking for an adult male is 10-14 standard glasses of wine (5 oz each) per week. For females, it's 7-10. Remember, that's the UPPER limit. Moderation is the key.

Theoretically, any red wine should convey the supposed health benefits, although the grapes from the Madiran region of France have been touted in recent reports as being superior due to their higher level of tannins.

The grape variety used in Madiran for the red wines is called Tannat. This variety happens to produce wines high in tannin. If the style is too tannic for you, your local wine merchant can recommend a great number of wines in that price range which would be good. Also, the tannat grape is grown in Argentina as well, so you could try a "new world" example at an affordable price.

Finally, I believe that the health benefit of wine goes beyond just the chemical protective qualities of the antioxidants in the wine. It has to do with the overall well being that is promoted by enjoying a relaxing meal and a bottle of wine with friends and loved ones.

Cheers!

Try the Charles Shaw label at Trader Joes. Quite cheap (about 5-6$) and good. Very nice is the Shiraz. Reds are supposedly better for health.Find local stores at Traderjoes.com. Good luck.

watched a programme recently where a doctor wired up a presenter and took readings etc before and after 2 glasses of red wine. the result was ,the wine caused the veins to enlarge and so blood flow was easier , therefore ,pressure was reduced on the heart to pump blood around the body.

I don't know by winery or by brand label, but basically, the benefits are derived from the grape skins. Try something in the $10. price range, and go from there. Best wishes After the first drink, they all seem to taste the same.
