My 6 month old Yorkie pup is not letting me know that she has to potty when she is allowed to roam the house. When She is in the crate, she will bark and such. But if she is not in the crate, and let's say walking around the kitchen, she would squat right in front of me!! How can I get her to give me a signal that she has to go? Are my expectations too high? Is this a respect issue??

Other info:

She is alone about 4 hours a day 3 days a week. During that time, she is in the spacious laundry room with her crate and water and a peepee pad. She has numerous toys and we leave the tv on so she doesnt get lonely. she doesnt have accidents on the floor as long as she has the pad.

When puppies are young they are just like babies they pee involuntarily. By 6 months she should be fully trained to pee on command. Keep confining her at night to her crate. Spend time with her at the place she is meant to pee. Always use the same spot. Once she pees say 'pee', 'wee' or whatever your chosen word is then reward her both verbally and with a treat. You have about 16s to start rewarding her. Try to do this several times a day and she will soon get the idea. When she pees where you dont want ignore it make no fuss at all!! She may be doing it to get attention from you. Dogs dont really care if it is good or bad attention. Make sure you clean it up when she is NOT in the room. She mustnt see you fuss. She should only get attention for peeing when she does it where you want. Use an enzyme degrading product to remove the smell from around your house. Remember though puppies get infections (and other things including incontinence!). It might be worth checking if she doesnt have one and if this is why she cant hold on. Cheer up, it will all work out.
