i don't know about raping and killing but absolutely yes, christians are held back from doing what they really want for several reasons: They are not accountable to themselves instead they are accountable to god. I think that is the easy way out. It is much harder to know that everything that i do i am accountable to myself for and i will bear the consequences, good or bad. Not just heaven or hell. Also i cannot blame the devil or God for my successes and failures and if something doesn't work out, i don't have the loophole of, "oh well, it wasn't god's will" Instead i have to find out why it did not work out and find a way to prevent it from happening next time or anticipate it. The point is total accountability for one's life and actions vs blaming, relying and crediting and discrediting someone else for events in our lives. Absolutely yes, christians are held back from doing what they really want to do for fear of consequences and fear of looking like hypocrites. On the other hand people like myself evaluate things before i do it. I will never kill anyone because i am depriving them of the freedom to live and i have no right to do that. On the other hand, i will indulge in premarital sex and be accountable for all the pleasures and consequences that may result. If it doesn't make sense to me i don't do it, if it does, i do. Its that simple

Sometimes I really wonder if thats the case. Especially given the number of times that Christians ask why Atheists aren't out hurting everyone around them and how they can have morals. They seem to honestly think that they need to be TOLD not to hurt other people. Its why I've even asked on here whether Christians are secretly sociopathic since they seem to think they have no morals without that ancient book telling them what to do.
Its disturbing.
It makes me wonder about the state of the world and whether Christians really are held back. How many of these people actually have no moral center?

Some people are firm believes that it is law that keeps people doing what is right.
If there was no law in our justice system against theft, many such people think everyone would steal.
These people are not very evolved - spiritually.
A truly enlightened or spiritually evolved person would do the right thing if there were no rules or laws because they know it is the right thing to do. There are many atheists that fit this category, as well as theists and agnostics.

Christians are people too. If an atheist has the desire to rape and kill, there is not much stopping him. A Christian has the power of the Holy Spirit to overcome such desires. That's the difference I think he was trying to convey.

on condition that they took the suspected gunman into custody, i imagine they have already taken action. i have in no way heard of a modern-day case in which an act of terrorism went unchecked contained in the U. S. because the criminal became Christian. until eventually you're advocating the punishment of all Christians for the crimes of a few. in which case, i imagine all atheists could be held to blame for the Columbine shootings and those killed contained in the call of the eugenics flow.

If someone truly believes in and loves God and has the holy spirit inside of them they are made a new person "the old has gone the new has come." They will not have the desire to sin against God any longer but sin is human nature. They will still sin but have the desire to obey God and not displease him.

Many rules are designed to protect people from things that will make them miserable, but the people don't understand that at the moment. This can easily be seen with raising children, sports training, car maintenance, computer programming techniques, etc. Not everyone learns this as they grow older, but many do.

When I got truly saved, my will became God's will.
I'm very fulfilled.
" I can only assume that the threat of hell is the only thing holding this guy back from doing what he would rather do which is rape and kill."
...
I think the love of Christ is what drawed me.

they act like, because we don't believe in a god, we are totally inhuman/e.
whereas they do no sin out of 'obediance' or fear of 'getting in trouble', i (an atheistic eclectic pagan) do no harm because i feel that all things are interconnected and harm done to one will harm All. i do not think that they grasp this concept, or if they do, they describe it so differently neither side recognizes it as such.
obediance & fear of getting in trouble didn't do much to curb my teenage rebellion, and doesn't really inspire me to truly BE good, just to ACT good. whereas believing that one action could have a snowball effect on All there is makes me think about my actions more fully. i feel that there is much more stopping me since i hold these beliefs, than there is stopping someone who's acting out of fear.

okay, hold the phone. im seriously upset that your saying that all of us Christians want to do...that stuff. Great. One example. how many more do you need to match up to how many athiests have that desire? im not saying all athiests are killlers and rapists, but think about it-NEITHER ARE CHRISTIANS! as a Christian, i can honestly tell you that i, along with everyone else on the planet, sins. but since ive met my savior, i WANT to do good, to please him, to try my hardest not to sin. where did you get this off-the-wall story anyway?
