interesting topic, I see lots of great answers... and maybe they have already made sense of what this muddle is... growing up, I was just as confused....

1) the Romans said Jesus was king of the Jews... when Jesus was nailed to the cross the sign that is believed to have been posted was "Jesus King of the Jews" in one form or another... the exact phrasing is in dispute still I believe...in mockery of the Jewish Nation and people.... I do not have a bible in front of me.. so, I might be a little wrong...Pilate the representative of the Roman nation (I do not know if he was Ceasar? or just high up official-type) refered to him as the "king" but only mocking him... all reference to Romans and Jesus being king? they did not think that... feel that.... they were laughing at the fact that they had believed that one day this great leader (the Messiah) would come and defeat the evil Romans and the Hebrew nation would be returned to it's glory and the promise restored to the people... and they were able to nail him up to a cross without being struck down...

2) the Jewish people believed that Jesus was messiah at first.. but when he did not form an army to overthrow the Romans who occupied their country; they thought he was a charlatan/deceiver and some/most turned away... they did not understand the messiah was always supposed to fight for our souls... not our flesh....

3) Jesus' religon; He was born Jewish/Hebrew he went to temple, studied the Torah as an adult he kept the commandments, he worshiped the way he was raised.. ie. the last supper? passover, I believe?

4) it makes no sense because like all of us, you might be thinking he estabished the religion that carried on throughout the centuries, Christianity..... but, it was the job of the Apostles to spread the Word, of the Way..... this may have started before his death by him... it continued secretly after his death and rebirth... and it grew...... until it was it's own "religion" Christianity

again, I have no bible in front of me... but at some point when recruiting his apostles he truns to one and says your name shall be John for you shall be the rock, the foundation upon which a/my religon is built...
--I am sure someone will post an answer now with that quote corrected ;>

plain simple to what religion? Jewish

but; there really is so much more...
he is also a rebel in many ways... "ahead of the times"
that is for another forum, another question....

hope this has cleared those questions up
good luck
take care

The founder of a religion, or any institution for that matter, must necessarily be a member of another (or no) faith. Jesus, the Christ, could not be a "Christian" because Christianity did not yet exist.

Jesus was a Jew, living in Palestine under Roman occupation. He was regarded as a Jew by the people around him. His disciples came to believe that he was the fulfillment of Jewish history and messianic expectation, but many other people did not. Because of this disagreement, AFTER Jesus was gone, the Jews who followed Jesus had to separate from the majority of Jewish adherents, thereby becoming what were called "Christians".

The Roman designation of Jesus as "king of the Jews" (according to the Christian scriptures) was a joke, based on the accusation that the Jewish leaders made, that Jesus was proclaiming himself "king". It was intended to insult the accusers, not state a fact.

Well, about the King of the Jews. Jesus was a Jew. That doesn't mean the Jewish religion! He was Jewish. There are also some Jews that believe in Jesus! But Jesus didn't need to belong to a religion to get into Heaven! He was sent from Heaven. He's God's Son, and has been around as long as God, forever! When Jesus died and rose, that gave us the ability to go to Heaven. I hope this helps!

According to the bible Jesus was Jewish. Christianity was founded on the premise that Jesus Christ (Christ/Christianity, see the similarity) was the coming of the Messiah and died for the sins of his people. The Jewish religion has all the same beliefs except for the Jesus thing (Jesus didn't quite make curtain call) that is why the old testament and the Torah are the same book.

Lots of good answers but just this note, Jesus said that he was the good Shepard in John 10: 12. David says that The LORD is my Shepard in Palms 23. That should mean then that the LORD of the old Testament is the Jesus of the new. In other words, Jesus is the founder of Judaism since he created the world and the people in it, and the founder of Christianity. Read also what Simeon said in Luke about Jesus

I noticed some people didn't really try to answer the question.

Jesus was Jewish as he believed in God. Christianity was a following after his teaching about god specifically. So while Jesus essentailly set the steps for Christianity he himself was Jewish

dude!

a> Romans were making fun of him and the whole country/Jewish nation when they did that. they were not seriously calling him king.

b> your friend should not take naps in CCD or Church, he would know that Jesus celebrated the Last Supper which was a Jewish day of Religious observation long before Jesus
and you would not be able to tell him he is a ditz, if he knew a little of what he opened his mouth about...lol ;>

c> no need to be confused ;> he was Jewish, just like his people.. the ones he came to save!

Jesus was a Jew. He was brought up in the Jewish faith and read the Torah in the temple. Even after he died and was resurrected, his apostles were still Jews. It wasn't until years later that the sect that followed the teachings of Jesus were labeled as 'Christians'.

Jesus is and always will be Jewish.
The Orthodox Jews don't believe that Jesus was the Messiah they were expecting; so they disregarded Him. Reformed Jews still follow the teachings of the Torah, but also the New Testament- which acknowledges His Saviorship.
Jesus is King of everything, but it is The Church- His church that leads us to an eternity with Him. Thanks for asking. Be blessed. Love you!
