If your head dangles over the pillow, resting on your neck not your head or if you keep your head in the same possition for a length of time.

Also, why do people say 'you've slept in a draft? If you wake up with a stiff leg they don't say, 'Oh, it's been in a draft' They say you've probably bruised it or youve pulled something

It all depends really, sleeping on your side with one hand under your pillow raising your neck is listed as the worst of all positions on medtalk blog, but it also says stress and poor support of pillows can do it too!

I suggest a heating wrap around it...15 minutes on, 15 minutes off for the next day or two and you'll be good to go.

Feel better!

Hot showers, heating pads and OTC heat rubs will help ease the stiffness.Asprin or ibuprofen will help with the pain and inflamation. Sleep on your back on a FIRM mattress or put a piece of plywood between the mattress and box springs. Try sleeping without a pillow. Many people say its more comfortable and eases neck pain. Your head weighs about 8 lbs. Don't sit for long periods of time. Get up and move arround. It gives your neck a rest.

Any position that causes your neck to sharply bend in any direction. Too many pillows,.. pillows under your shoulders,..

Could is be something else? I thought my problem was related to my sleeping position(s), but it turned out to be a moderately heavy BOOK BAG that I carried over my right shoulder almost every day. I downsized, went to a briefcase and within a couple of weeks my neck was almost completely back to normal.

I had a relapse a couple of years later which really concerned me,.. THAT episode was due to a period of heavy cell phone use when I often would cradle the tiny phone between my ear and shoulder.
