I'm badly allergic to cats. I dated a girl with a cat a few years back...it took about a month of regular visits and overnight stays for me to get used to the cat. The allergies actually lessened to a tolerable degree, but I did have to take allergy medicines when I was first dating her.

Many people who suffer from allergic reactions to cats are allergic to their dander. There are certain breeds that people seldom have an allergy to i.e. Siamese for one. So, many people keep them as pets.
Other than that, you could be tested by an allergist to know exactly what and to what extent you are allergic. The Dr. would then develop a vaccine and he would inject it on a specific schedule. This would allow you to have contact with the cat. Other than that, over the counter meds are the only answer. I'm sorry to tell you that in extreme cases, they would have to give up the cat.
