I was given a 29 year old Arabian mare with severe breathing problems. The person who gave her to me had a stallion and as it turned out the mare was bred and about 8 months after I got her, she had a filly from that breeding. The foal was ok but for the first week the mare had no milk at all . It was very difficult and time consuming to feed the baby. Then after a couple more weeks---her milk came in and she raised that foal just fine. So, when she was 30, I bred her to my stallion and she had another fine filly but again---she had to have a lot of help feeding her. When the filly was about 4 1/2 months old---I could see the mare was going to die and I hoped that she would last at least until her baby was 5 months old. The week before she went down---she weaned the foal---just pushed her away. The day the filly(whom I named Finale) was 5 months old, her Mom went down and did not get up. Because I expected the mare to die, I took a lot of time to give the baby supplemental food so she did thrive. She is extremely people-oriented as a result of being an orphan

There's a 43 year old horse right now at the place where I volunteer. They give riding lessons to kids with disabilities and this horse refuses to let himself be retired and still does 1 hour every week.
