Hi my cat has come down with a cold. She seems to be sneezing out a red colored mucus and sometimes it even looks like human bugars! SOrry for the graphic explanation. She seems normal otherwise, but I am getting sick of cleaning up her snotty mess! Has anyone experienced this? If so please help! I am hoping there is something I can do before taking her to the vet due to financial reasons. Please don't respond if all you want to do is bag on me, you do not know my situation and do something better with your time as well.

It could be an upper respiratory infection or sinusitis. We have a cat who gets seasonal allergies and develops sinusitis just like I do. I would be concerned about the blood, though. The best thing to do would be to take her to the vet. Most vets understand that people have budgets and will be willing to work out a payment plan with you if you have an established relationship. This link has good suggestions for how to pay for vet care: http://www.hsus.org/pets/pet_care/what_you_can_do_if_you_are_having_trouble_affording_veterinary_care.html

If you don't have a regular vet, look for one with an established practice and an older vet - they are often more skilled at diagnosing problems without being overly reliant on expensive tests, though sometimes testing is necessary to tell exactly what's wrong.

In the meantime, watch your cat carefully to make sure she's eating - sometimes cats with a stopped-up nose will not eat, and that can lead to serious problems.

Best wishes!

Cats experience much the same symptoms as we do when we have a cold. They get snotty runny noses, runny eyes, sneezing, temperature etc. These infections are called secondary infections. It is important that when your kitten gets a cold that that they receive the proper treatment. Follow your vet's recommendations.Your cat cannot blow it's nose, so you need to keep the mucous and discharge clean by wiping the nose as needed with a damp, warm rag or tissue. A cat cold will last from 7 to 10 days. Be very careful about dehydration! If your cat is not eating and is becoming dehydrated, buy some canned cat food. I would still advise you too take your cat to the vet if this doesn't clear up in 7-10 days.

She sounds like she has a URI. If she's sneezing and blowing boogers, she has a secondary infection that needs an antibiotic- that means a vet visit. Are you a regular client? Have you tried talking to the practice manager to see if payment plans are a possibility?

Is she eating okay? When cats are sick, they usually can't smell very well. You may need to start feeding her canned food that has been zapped in the microwave for a few seconds to warm it up and make it more appetizing. Do you have a humidfier? I would isolate her in a small room (like a bathroom) and turn one on. She may be sneezing blood because the air is to dry and she's breaking open the blood vessels in her nose. Breathing moist air will help that.

Your kitty sounds like she has an upper respiratory infection. Since she is eating and hopefuly drinking well and you cannot as for now take her to a vet, you can do the folowing thisngs help her "cold":

1. Crush 100mg human grade Vitamin C in her wet canned cat food everyday for the next 3 to 5 days. This is to boost her immune system.

2. Everyday, especialy when her congestion is very bad, turn on the hotwater shower in the bathroom and create a really good steamy room. Sit inside there (NOT under the shower!) in the bathroom with your kitty on your lap for 5 to 10 mins. Or you can leave kitty on his own in there with the door closed. The steam will help clear up his congestion and help him to breathe easier.

3. DO NOT let kitty outdoors. Keep her in a warm, dry cosy place in your home - especially when she naps or sleeps.

4. Feed her good quality canned cat food. Not only wil the good nutrition help her regain strength to throw off the infection, but wet cat food has a stronger, more enticing aroma that encourages cats to eat. If needed or if you want, you can heat the cat food a little in the microwave for 5 to 10 SECONDS, no more.

5. Make sure that kitty is drinking plebty of fresh water everyday. If you have an oral medicine syringe, you can use this to squirt water directly into her mouth - the fluids will help flush her system clean. Oh, insert the syringe nozzle AT THE SIDE of the cats mouth - easier that way.

6. Finally, give kitty plenty of love and affection and praise her excessively when she eats or drinks. It is amazing how much a dose of TLC and Love inspire our pets to get better.

Good luck and God heal your kitty soon.

Cats don't really get ' colds ' like people do. Sneezing can mean alot of things. Sneezing blood.. well that's more serious. Could mean a tumor, and nothing you can do at home to treat that.
It could also be a blockage.. something caught in her nose.
Could be she has an allergy and is sneezing so hard she is getting nose bleeds.Could be an upper respiratory infection...The vet is the one that has to see the cat, it's not an easy one to answer, there are too many things that it could be, and none of them particularly good...

One thing you could do is call your vet and ask what you could do for your cat, make sure the red isnt something serious. They cant charge you for asking. And if they refuse to answer try another vet clinic in the area. Usually amoxicillian is prescribed for colds. (That pink medicine that tastes like bubble gum)

Ive used Vet RX for my cats when they get a cold sometimes. Its a all natural remedy for animals. It costs like $7 a bottle. Tractor Supply, Valley Vet Supply and other places carry it. It comes in a yellow box and its a brown bottle. I dont usually recommend it. Some people may not agree with it. But its cheaper than a vet visit.

My cat went through with what you are describing. And unfortunately I have to tell you that the only solution was taking him to the vet. He was sneezing out this stuff that was so bad it would get onto the walls of our house or on our sheets and it was very hard to get out. I can tell you that if you do call your vet and explain to them the symptons and explain that you are on a low finances they may be able to just hand over the medication to you. Our vet has done that with us before. Or you might try asking if there is any herbal remedies that you could buy online or through a pet catalog (it might be just as pricey as a vet visit though). Hope this helps. hope the kitty gets better!!

Your cat may have a bad case of an Upper Respiratory Infection, but it could be something more serious. You need to take her to the vet right away no matter what she's sick with.

I is probably fine because cats do sneeze & get colds. But I had a cat one time that got into some kind of poison like rat poison. He sneezed bloody snot, he had to have potassium pills. I don't want to scare you or anything. If it was that, it would get worse quickly.

It sounds like a normal cold, but I would be a little worried about the redness, her nose could just be a little chapped and bleeding a little. You may just take her to the vet, they could give you some medicine to clear it up.
