eat/eating the top layer of your wedding cake on your 1 year anniversary? our 1 year is comming up on april 1. just 3 weeks away!! we have saved ours. we used one of thoes freezer sealers that suck all the air out before you freeze something, so im hoping it wont be freezer burned.
anyway, just wondering to thoes who did save their top layer, did you eat it? was it good or did it taste like cardboard?
the lady, that made our cake offered to make us a new one for our anniversary, but since i hate her and she almost made our cake fall over at the wedding(long story), i will not be using her services.
we are going out of town for our anniversary, and dont think we need to bring the whole entire layer. we were thinking about cutting it in half. has anyone done this? if so, how did it work out?
thanks in advance :o)

i think tradition is great, and so eating the top layer to me is not grose. and its not like im eating frozen eggs as some people put it. when you make a cake, you bake it. duh! sorry but i just thought thoes answers about the frozen egg thing were weird. its not like i froze a dozen eggs and im eating them, now that is grose.

We froze ours too and it was fantastic!! We went out of our way to make sure air could not get to it and all was well. With you using a bag system, all should be just fine. Just smell it and look at it - you will be able to tell if you have freezer burn. We did not have to cut it in half as we specifically ordered a little one just for saving. You can eat it over the next week or so.

We kept the top layer of our wedding cake, in the freezer at my Mom's. We didn't have it on our anniversary, though we would have-we were living about a thousand miles away from where we got married, and there just wasn't a good way to get it from my Mom's freezer to our house. We ordered a cake from a local place, and had it for our anniversary. We defrosted the cake at the first visit following our first anniversary, ate a bite or two each, and that was it. I think the value of the tradition was important, having a bite or two of the cake, but the cake itself was pretty awful after a year, and I was glad we'd had a new cake made.

I just got married a week ago. We saved our top layer. Per the cake lady, we wrapped it in plastic then put it in air tight container, then wrapped in plastic and foil. She said to defrost in the fridge. My friend celebrated their 1 year anniversary a couple years ago and they ate the top layer.. (I got some too) and it tasted sooo good. It also depends on what your top layer is made out of. My cake lady said that fillers like rasberry dont freeze well. The best filler to have on the top layer is buttercream frosting.
I would defrost the cake in the fridge then right before you leave cut the cake in half and place in cooler. or just take the whole thing.
Have a good anniversary!
You're right the comment about eating 12 frozen eggs is a bit cheezy.. the eggs were cooked when the cake was baked!

Tradition Tradition! Hopefully the cake will not be too frostbitten so that you have a couple good bites. Most home baked goods only freeze for 3 months well, but you might get lucky with the special freezer box. I wonder if this tradition isn't to remind you that even though things aren't always perfect in a marriage you should just learn to deal with it sometimes... Hmmm....

My husband and I saved the top of our wedding cake. We ended up eating most of it during our 1st week of marriage. We saved 2 slices fro the 1st anniversary. We were glad it was only 2 slices. It was awful. We threw it out, went to a nearby bakery and purchased a small cake. That's been our tradition for over 30 years now. Save a piece from last last year, throw it out, buy another.

When the cakes are frozen properly, they can taste just as fresh as the day of your wedding (ours did). One day before your 1st anniversary, just begin defrosting the your cake in your refrigerator. After about 2 hours, remove the cake from its wrapping and continue to defrost in the refrigerator. Then on your anniversary take it out a few hours before you plan to eat it so it can come to room temperature. We went out of town for our anniversary too and ate our cake when we came back since we didn't want to travel with it. But I think it's fine if you only want to take half of it with you.

I think I would buy a new cake and write "Happy First Anniversary" on it and stick the little figurines from the wedding cake on the new cake. I wouldn't want to eat old freezer-burnt cake. And I'd probably forget it was in my freezer in the first place.

im not going to freeze my top layer because we're getting married in ca but driving back home to phoenix, and i didnt think a cake would hold up for 12 hours. but the lady thats doing my cake said they usually taste alright after a year. just defrost it for awhile before you try eating that thing. enjoy and congrats on your anniversary!

wow it stinks that you don't like the baker. I honestly wouldn't want a new cake made for me because it wouldn't be the same you know? Even if it does taste like crap, it's just the tradition. I think it's a cute idea and I will probably eat mine a year after my wedding too. Take a couple bites and just be happy together =)

Twenty seven years ago I flew from Massachusetts to Texas with a frozen wedding cake layer in a box on my lap to meet my husband who had got out of basic training two days before our first anniversary. I don't think I even remember what the cake tasted like......
