No, you won't get charged $2,500 per minute. You could get charged a couple of dollars a minute which is still something you do not want. These are numbers that are in the Caribbean and they are not free to call. Also, their premium rate numbers aren't 900 or 976 so you could be calling a premium rate number without knowing it, however, you will never see $2,500 per minute. It's a real problem (albeit minor) blown way out of proportion. It's not just 809 anymore that's in the Caribbean, there are many other area codes, too. Why would you dial a number that you didn't know what it was anyway? No real danger here, just use common sense.

And yes, Snopes does have something on this:

I've heard of that.... but I don't work for the phone company, but there truly are so many phone scams, that I don't doubt it one bit. Another making the rounds right now is someone will call saying he is a technician from ATT ( or another service provider ) just checking the clarity of the lines. They ask you to punch 90# ... and when you do, you have given permission for them to use your phone at will... and lots over overseas calls will be billed to you. You've posted a good question to make us all remember to not be so gullible just because someone sounds professional on the other end. Thanks !

that's true. Its Tiffany's toll free directory. And as we all know the smallest purchase could run up in the 5 digit numbers. Therefore I believe it.
