In English a usual conversation opener is "Hello, How are you?" If the person responds and says "and you?" make sure to answer "Fine, thanks", even if you are having a bad day. A good topic of conversation might include the weather, politics, or something that is about the other person which ISN'T negative. If you like something they're wearing, complement them on it, but don't over do it. After a simple starter like that the conversation should flow smoothly.
If for some reason something goes wrong in the conversation, such as an disagreement or an awkward silence, you may quickly change the subject. If it is an argument, then say something like, "Is that Don over there? Hello Don." and bring that person into the conversation.
The only time when it is OK to bring yourself up as the main topic of conversation is if it is something dumb, or stupidly embarrassing, or if you have reached last resort silence, when a few failed conversation starters have already failed.
Good Luck!

Hi! So, how is your day? Did you watch ___________ last night?! Ah man, you should have seen it! What's your favorite song now? Mine is ____________. I'm going to get______, do ya want one? Catch you later!
Just start off with the basics. Ask about entertainment news or sports to get going. Most will talk to you more about their favorites TV shows, and then you won't have to talk much. People love hearing themselves talk. Hope I helped!

It would truly be hard to answer this question because you didn't say where you are from. I guess you could start with Good morning, how are you today?
