I have had a scratchy throat for about a week. Not super sore... just a little dry, like a cold is coming on, but it hasn't hit me full on yet. Also, about a week ago I noticed that the right side of my throat seems to be swollen. There is no pain in it, and my mom says she thinks it's my thyroid. It's not a hard lump or anything... it's very soft. But, couple that with my sore throat and I'm worried. My dr. is closed and my googling has my mind reeling. Anyone else have this situation and it turns out to be strep or something minor (something OTHER than thyroid cancer).

I have thyroid cancer but my symptoms were not like yours. The swollen area was hard not soft. If you have tonsil crypts (indented tonsils) they can get infected and cause swelling. With thryoid cancer the swelling is defined looking. You may just have a swollen lymph node, maybe fighting something off. Don't worry yourself silly, don't doctors have a funny way of not being there when you need them?LOL

Try Vitamin C therapy. A few years ago a cancer researcher came out with a paper saying that the best cancer and infection fighter as yet found was Interferon, but, at the time, it cost $15,000 a gram. The good part was that Interferon was a product of the natural breakdown of Vitamin C in your system. Shortly after that paper came out the FDA tried to make Vit C by prescription only. Guess why? The FDA says that the RDA for Vit C is 64 mg a day, just enough to prevent scurvy. Linus Pauling, who got a Nobel Prize for his work with Vit C and a second Nobel Prize for organic chemistry, said 1000 mg a day as a minimum and 2000 mg a day if you are sick. On a personal note, I was sick twice a year, for 2 weeks at a time, for 20 years, and was flat on my back for at least a week each time. To this day the doctors have no idea what the problem was. After I gave up on the doctors I tried Vit C. I took enough to keep from being sick and just below too much to get diarrhea. It followed a bell curve over 2 weeks with a peak at 40,000 mg a day – about 300,000 over the 2 weeks. I was not sick for those 2 weeks and after a couple of years of that I have not been sick since. I did not dissolve my kidneys, as some doctors said would happen. I did not get any calcium build up or stones and did not dissolve my cones or solidify my joints. Try it, but drink a lot of water – Vit C is a natural diuretic.

Seriously doubt it is your thyroid. You would have numerous other symptoms that go along with the thyroid and the thyroid is over your throat, not to the side.
If you have a sore throat and a little swelling on one side, it could be viral and a swollen lymph node. If it doesn't get better in a few days, see a doctor.
Tonsils usually swell on both sides and you have fever if they are infected.

Your spleen would only become inflamed in an extreme case of mono. Your throat would be very sore, most likely covered in white. The lymph nodes in your neck, groin, and armpits would become tender. And you would be extremely fatigued. So, no this isn't mono. No offense, but it's not a good idea to self-diagnose. You would not be able to feel if your spleen was swollen.

First of all thyroid cancer is very rare, and the lump would be in the front of your throat, I know because I have an enlarged thyroid and when I asked the doctor about cancer he said it is like a 5% chance which is very slim. It is probably a sore throat and a swollen lymph node, they enlarge when you get sick. Don't worry!! By the way, you don't get a scratchy throat from a thyroid problem.

My big brother had something like that a few weeks ago, when he had flu. He had a bad cough & he also had a lump in his throat, he couldn't feel it while swallowing i don't think but he could feel it when he pressed his neck. It hurt when he pressed on it, and i think it was hard.
If it doesn't hurt, it'll hopefully go away, but make an appointment with your GP if it's doesn't go away within 5 days of its appearence, as it could be Mumps or Glandular Fever.

Hope it goes okay for yoo =] xx

About two years ago I had bronchitis then noticed a small swelling (soft lump) on the left side of my neck. I went to a ENT doctor and told me I had something called a brachial cleft cyst. He said I was born with it and just came to a surface at the age of 44. Now I need surgery to have it removed because it has gotten rather large. Please go to the doctor and have him check it out. Good luck!
