You have to be the one to make the choice since it's a symbol to you. Make sure it's one you know about and believe in.
This place has a lot of options:

It would help if you would add details about the situation. When my mother passed I got a butterfly on my spine. A butterfly because she taught me how to fly, and on my spine because she was my backbone. I also had her initials in the wings. This may not help at all..but the example is just to kinda show that its easy when you think about what could symbolise what you love about that person. If you just learnt a huge lesson or somthing, then get something to symbolise it. If you just got alot stronger, then get a ram, or a bull, or somthing you see as 'strong'. You can also talk to the tattoo artist and i'm sure they will be more than happy to work with you on a design. Just make sure you're happy with it!!
Happy Inkin'!

I just got a tattoo of a heart with wings to symbolize the freedom i felt after i'd finally let go of a guy who was constantly breaking my heart. I think its a good way to express that you feel free!
I agree though, you should have been more specific with the type of difficult time, that way people would have a better idea to help you with...

is there an image that reminds you of the difficult time, or overcoming it? it doesn't have to be a sign or a symbol. it could be something that nobody else would associate with the emotion or event you are trying to convey. for instance trees are great at holding up thru storms and natural disasters. if i had a difficult time in my life and i came out of it a better person i would probably get a tattoo of an oak tree because they represent wisdom and strength to me. think outside the box.

tattoos are a real nice why to express alot of different thing in your life, however your question doesn't explain the difficult time in your life, a little more information would be helpful to get an answer that you will like.

Try a lighting bolt symbolizing your search for inner strength and how you've overcome your problems. Shamrocks are also a sign of hope. If you like the symbol of life I would try putting an ankh which is the egyptian synbol for life. Hope this helps

I think a butterfly is a great way to smybolize change and growth. I personally think a red and black butterfly would be cool (but those are just my favorite colors). A butterfly shows that you have been through trials and come out stronger.

whatever you went through make sure if you get sybols of this on your body that its something you want to be reminded of each day because a tatoo is pretty much forever and you dont want to make a mistake and put a bad part of your life on you and then have to be reminded of it I probably did not answer you question but I wanted you to realize the fact you may not want to always remeber your past but maybe so =)

The final you are able to still be on a branch it rather is it fairly is now everlasting it fairly is "domicile". you may desire to even upload greater to the branch interior the destiny as you get married and have teenagers. properly, that's an thought i seen when I become older.

I went thru alot myself, and I also got a tattoo. I got a butterfly landing on a vine. Butterflys represent new beginnings. I got it on my shoulder. I like it and so have others.
