flew from US to India 6 years ago and it is a long flight.
I survived by drinking only water, no sodas or liquor so I wouldn't feel dehydrated, and also ate very lite, nothing greasy or salty.
Also I slept on the plane, fortunately going over we had extra rows of seats so we were real comfortable and rested. Coming back we were squished in like sardines and it was tough. I did make it a point to walk around the plane as much as possible due to the danger of blood clots. I also take those books of crossword puzzles, didn't have a laptop then, would take it now if I could. If you couldn't do anything else, maybe you could play games offline. Also stocked up on magazines. Actually the time went pretty fast. Was sorry for my vacation to be over! Relax and have fun!

Not much you can do about the tight spaces if you want to fly. Wear comfortable clothes so you can relax easily. After the meal they always turn up the heat in the plane which sends everybody off to sleep. Wear a layer that you can remove so you don't overheat and dehydrate. Take a travel pillow to save your neck and a book just in case you can't sleep. There is so much to do on planes these days that you won't be at a loss to keep yourself entertained. I hate tight spaces too but you settle into it pretty quickly once you're on there. The thought of it is far worse than the reality.

I traveled from California to Botswana last summer and I did a couple things to help the confined feeling. I did take melatonin to reset my inner time clock. Take a travel pillow (I highly recommend the mugu pillows from Brookstone) You need to create your own space, so take comfort items. Slipper socks for your feet and you can put your shoes under the seat in front of you. Take a toothbrush and toothpaste and a washrag to take a "sort of" bath while in-flight. Wear comfortable clothes like sweats or other breathable items. Take a good book and some type of puzzles. Make sure you drink plenty of water and get up often. I usually get up every couple of hours and do some leg stretches near the emergency exit or near the bathroom areas.

Have a wonderful trip!!!

Alcohol. Just kidding. Try to pull an all-nighter before the trip. Stay awake, clean the house, pack, exercise, shop at the 24-hour Wal-mart, whatever. By the time you get on the plane you should be so tired you will drop to sleep which should take up half that flight time if not more. After that, well, several magazines, an I-pod, movies on the laptop, whatever.

It's a state of mind, really. Try to be relaxed about the situation. If you board the plane with trepidation, you will suffer more. Try not to use words like "survive" or "confined". Don't be thinking the whole time "I can't stand this! I hate it!" Be positive, cool, and you will be fine.

Don't drink any coffee or other caffeinated drinks the night and during the time before departure. Make sure don't eat to heavy, it will help you sleep during your flight. It won't cover the full 14 hours, but it helps. I always bring a stack of magazines, play games on the flight or watch a movie. Wear easy shoes and kick them off, so you can relax your legs. also request for a aisle seat, so you easily can move out and rest your legs in the aisle for a bit, make sure the flight attendants don't ride over your toes, but it makes it all easier. Good luck.

Read a good book (or several); do crossword, word search or Suduko puzzles; write poetry; take along a portable DVD player; MP3 player; sleep; I know you said besides drugs, but I would suggest at least some Benadryl or Dramamine

sleep definitely,

i know you said no drugs, but motion sickness pills may not be a bad idea, they make you sleepy which may be a good thing considering how nervous you are about your trip. they are over the counter and it only takes one pill to make you sleepy for a good 8 hours. (Dramamine)

However if you really are wanting to avoid any kind of drug, take a stress ball, book to read, crossword or other puzzle book, anything to keep you occupied. The less you pay attention to the plane itself the better off you ll be

Dude, spend the extra money and fly business class. You get excellent food, 30 or 40 movies, and the seat reclines flat like a bed. No other way to go!

Try and stay awake the night before and take a neck pillow to sleep with. Also try a handheld gaming device. It doesn't have to be anything expensive, they sell single games for about ten bucks at toy stores.
