Being an MP will not get you to the NSA. You need to go into Military Intelligence. Then get into electronic warfare. Then when you retire, after 20 years you move into the same job as a Federal Civilian Employee.

I have known people who work for the NSA (I live near the NSA in maryland) and you don't really "have to have been in the army" to work there. There are plenty of civilians who work there and make pretty good money. Besides, the NSA doesn't really have "agents" like the FBI or CIA the NSA functions to gather information by electronic, satellite, or other indirect means to provide to the National Security Council. If a task required someone to go out to a location then they would use interagency agreements with the FBI or others to go out into the field.

If you want to become a field agent then you probably would want to work for the FBI or CIA. Military experience is helpful but not necessary for those jobs. Instead of being an MP you get better experience working in military intelligence.

First of all, you don't HAVE to be in the Army first to get in with the NSA. You can get in as a civil servant. However, being in the Army can give you a leg up. . . but only if you have a job with a high security clearance. Security Clearance is very expensive, and if you have one from the Army it will transfer straight to your next job at the NSA (clearance doesn't expire until after one year of inactivity). If you are going to be an MP, you aren't going to have a high clearance. You need to try to get an intelligence job with the army, such as a linguist. NSA wants you to have TS/SCI (Top Secret/Secret Compartmentalized Information). If you can get a job with at least Top Secret it will help, but the SCI part is really important to NSA. You can serve a minimum enlistment in the Army and then go to work for NSA so long as they have openings. If you can't get directly hired by NSA, there are a million companies doing contracts for NSA. The high security clearance is ESPECIALLY important to the contract companies. They don't want to pay $50,000 to get you clearance. They won't even consider you if you don't all ready have it. Good luck. P.S. My husband does not have a college degree and was hired. The security clearance is the most important thing. They can train you to do what they want.

It doesn't matter how long you serve... you could be in 3 years or 25... but it is up to NSA whether to hire you. You don't just automatically get hired.

Additionally, most NSA employees are just that-- employees. They aren't agents per say.

And NSA is an intelligence agency; not sure what experience an MP will give you that NSA will want. Sorry. If you are really interested in being hired by NSA, go into an intel MOS. I work as a Spanish Linguist and work with NSA employees....

You will need to complete your Army hitch, Graduate college and put an application in. Then go through a long screening process.
Being a Vet and an MP could help on the resume. Try for a Top Secret Security clearance.
