I really like the long and scenic path that circles the Valencia area in Santa Clarita (Northern LA county) Also, keep in mind that nearly all transit buses and rail services have provisions for bringing your bike with when riding allowing for some really cool adventures!

There are a number of good ones:

In Griffith Park, there is a path that goes along Crystal Springs Road, but you share that with cars. However, there is a bike-only path that runs from Victory Blvd & Forest Lawn Drive, next to the L.A. River, that runs for a few miles, down past Los Feliz.

At the beach, there is one that runs from the north end of Santa Monica Beach, south under the pier, through the Venice boardwalk, and ending in Marina Del Rey. If you go a little further on the streets, you can ride into Marina Del Rey village.

The Balonna Creek Trail runs from National Blvd (just south of Washington) all the way to the ocean. Nice enough path, but keep in mind that the wind will almost certainly be in your face the entire ride. The two exceptions, of course, are when the Santa Ana winds are blowing, or if you ride away from the beach (but what fun is that?)

Once you reach the ocean south of Marina Del Rey, you can continue down the coast through Dockweiler, Hermosa, Manhattan, and Redondo Beaches. Nothing like a ride at the beach.

In the San Fernando Valley, there are a number of trails around Sepulveda Dam, including the Orange Line bike path. There are a number of interruptions, which makes it less desireable.

Puddingstone Reservoir has a nice path around it.

Legg Lake also has a very nice path

And now you're ready for the big time: The San Gabriel River Trail, which runs 35 miles, literally "From the Mountains to the Sea". A number of other paths branch off of this, including the Rio Hondo Trail, and Coyote Creek trail.

There is another nice path, though it's in the OC, which startts at the Santa Ana Lakes in Yorba Linda, and goes to the ocean near Newport, and continues north to Bolsa Chica.

A word of caution when biking: Many of the above mentioned paths go through some neighborhoods which are not safe at night. Plan your day accordingly. Always carry water and a cell phone. Be careful and have fun!
