If they are a friend they wouldn't charge you, but shop around and see what the local wedding planners are charging. That will give you and idea.

Wedding planners get 20% of your budget. I planned my wedding and then had a family friend take over the day of the wedding to make sure everything went as planned and I didn't have to worry. I paid her $150 for the day.

Wedding planners - I've found out - should be paid 20% of your total wedding budget. However, if this family friend is planning your wedding at a discount for a wedding present, he/she should state their price. Also, friend or no friend, you should get a contract that details every step of what he/she is expected to do and what he/she expects in return. Mixing friendship and business is ALWAYS a bad idea so you want to be very sure of what is being agreed upon - I've seen friendships ruined because of one business venture or another -someone taking an overture because they felt it their due as a friend, someone not holding up to their end of the bargain and thinking it was okay because they were friends. Trust me, get the business in writing and save the friendship. Good luck.

WOW, I just read the 20% answer.... my wedding is costing $25,000 so that would be $5,000..... that's insane!!
I would give you what you feel is comfortable..... And I would go with more like 5%-10%..... since it's a family and friend. And is she a proffesional or just doing this for fun. If she doing it for fun, I might even just buy her a gift for a thank-you. I am helping one of my friends plan her whole wedding because I just got done planning mine and I don't want anything!!

the smart and honorable thing to do is go to wedding planning sites and see what they are charging and go from there. you didn't mention whether or not they are a professional wedding planner or not,b/c experience does factor into it. the bottom line is that they will be putting in their time to help you and once you price compare and see what they've put into it and make your decision from there but make sure you do right by them finacially, you don't want to lose a friend.

I would strongly suggest not going with a friend...
call professionals and discuss it with them.
if you have a freind do it, write up a contract that you both sign that says exactly what both of you expect...
i'd prepare to give up on the friendship also.

It depends on how much your budget is, they usually charge a percentage. Ask her how much she's going to charge. If she says it's her gift to you, then just get her a gift certificate.
