Well it really depends on what events you are in but some generic advice is
You should always warm up and cool down as well as stretch. It can help you prevent yourself from injuring yourself or pulling muscles, because that's not fun trust me!

Another thing you should do is practice a lot to build up your endurance and speed.

Also, buy good, comfortable athletic shoes. They should be lightweight, and easy to run in. You should also buy spikes. They can help improve your time and run faster. They should fit sort of like a sock. I myself am a sprinter, so my shoes don't have much padding on the heel area, but if you're a long distance runner, you should get one with more support on the heel. For the best advice, I would go to a running shoe store that specializes in shoes for the best advice on what kind of shoe is right for you
Hope this helps and have a good season and if you like track you might want to try Cross Country!

hydration is the most important factor to running well, otherwise you will cramp and have a lot of pain. Drink at least 64oz of water a day, not all at once but evenly throughout. Stretching will help keep you injury free and help you get stronger. Work hard or you won't get better, but don't worry about how you do compared to other people. In track I believe that self improvement is more important.

Running shoes are important to health feet which are quite important in track. Spikes are significantly less important, but durable training shoes that will last you a while are good.

what do you need help with? ill give u some pointers that work for me anyway. im runnin this year (freshman). yeah get some good shoes, and the guy who said dont buy nike shox, hes rite. i got some nike airs, just go with something lighter. i started taking my lunch because school food is crap and this sounds stupid but it would completely kill my stomache when i ran. cramp and all. so eat healthy. dont overdue it but dont slack. you need to be dedicated. ill run for about 4 or 5 days straight then take a day or so off. decide if you want to be a distance runner or sprinter, so you can start working on the type of races youll be running in the meets. just have fun, dont worry about anything, its not that bad, and if you dont like it, forget it and find you another sport. its a pretty good sport to keep you healthy and looking halfway decent though. so good luck.

Don't listen to most of these people. First of all try to start eating healthier. Also carry a water bottle on you during the day and sip it to keep hydrated. Also you don't need the best pair of running shoes(the 7th fastest xc runner in nj, somebody i know) wore shoes he bought for about $5 in china. Also start off running with a group that is around your pace. dont push it in the beginning. Make sure you work really hard later in the year in workouts and it will show in your races. Also its good to have pasta about 24 hours before your races.

Don't spare any expense on excellent quality running shoes. Otherwise you could end up injured. Shoes are the most important thing. Don't "pound" the track - run lightly. Don't overdo it at first, even to impress anyone. Build up to a long run. Be patient - it takes weeks or months to get to your real pace, even if a coach is pushing you so the school will score wins.

be prepared to run lots depending on your event there may be a lot of technique/repetition especially if you do hurdles or jumps(long/triple/high). The coach will need you to be dedicate, putting in the time and effort you need to become good at the event you pick.

Try your best and when you run your first mile or your first 100 meter dash at your best, just remember to fight past thoughs cramps that may come to you right away, because from there on its icing on the cake!!

1) expect to be dedicated. This doesn't mean work hard everyday, because some days are for resting. remember, rest is almost as important as the work itself.

2) please don't by nike shox. they're not good running shoes. go with some asics instead.

3) (i can't believe no one said this!!) HAVE FUN!
