Only one out of every ten children of a schizophrenic parent will develop schizophrenia. The risk of 10% is greater than the frequency of schizophrenia in the general population, which is about 1%.

There are some forms of mental illness which are inherited and schitzophrenia is one of them. However, like blue eyes or big ears, it's not 100% guaranteed that you will inherit it. If you are concerned, see a psychiatrist and ask what some of the symptoms are. Chances are that you are OK.
Even if you do have it, many schitzophrenics take medications which allow them to lead fairly uneventful lives.(For a schizophrenic, uneventful is a GOOD thing!)
Most people get pretty much what they set their heart on. Decide to live as normal a life as possible, then set out to do that. You are in my prayers. Best wishes to you.

Probably very slim, impossible to say though. There is some evidence that there is a genetic link. By the way that's not how you spell it--it's schizophrenia, and it's not a cancer--it's a mental disorder.

probably a 25 percent chance. there is not only evidence of a genetic link, there's strong evidence for it. you may not have full blown delusions, but you will likely fall somewhere along the spectrum. its not like okay you're seeing 666 on peoples' heads or your not. you could easily go through bouts of mania and still not fall into the dsm classificaiton. to be safe, you could consult with a psychologist and tell them how you feel.

Schizophrenia is a mental disorder. It is difficult for a person to tell the difference between real and unreal experiences, to think logically, to have normal emotional responses to others, and to behave normally in social situations.
Genetic factors appear to play a role, as people who have family members with schizophrenia may be more likely to get the disease themselves. Some researchers believe that events in a person's environment may trigger schizophrenia. For example, problems during intrauterine development (infection) and birth may increase the risk for developing schizophrenia later in life.

Psychological and social factors may also play some role in its development. However, the level of social and familial support appears to influence the course of illness and may be protective against relapse.

There are 5 recognized types of schizophrenia: catatonic, paranoid, disorganized, undifferentiated, and residual. Features of schizophrenia include its typical onset before the age of 45, continuous presence of symptoms for 6 months or more, and deterioration from a prior level of social and occupational functioning.

People with schizophrenia may show a variety of symptoms.

If you are truly worried i would consult with your doctor would refer you to a specialist and if it would make you feel better, you could get checked every so often.
Most likely the diease is dormant in your body, however it may never become active at all. Hard drugs such as acid, meth, heroine and shrooms may also trigger this disease to become active so stay away from any drug abuse.

Im sure you mean schizophrenia, which are delusions possibly caused by the misfiring of neurons, and overproduction of certain streoids in the brain. Anyways, schizophrenia can be hereditary, and is usually found in males. Schizophrenics tend to be highly intelligent, and a little *wierd* which is a term i use loosely. You shouldnt worry about it too much, however, if you begin to have delusions or anxiety, you should be checked. Most schizophrenics tend to show signs between about age 15 and 22.

Actually schitzophrenia can be a inherited disease. Just look for signs and symptoms as you get older and it can be treated so that you (and your dad) can live a normal life.

I know a guy with it. With medicine, you would never know.

If you feel paranoid or different let your mom know and you may want to start counseling in order to deal with you dad having it.

I looked it up in my mom's medical book since she is going to college and it didn't say anything about family getting, but I would say it is a small chance this happening.

Schizophrenia is not an inherited condition so your chances of having it are next to none at this point.
