English is used an an international language because in the past the English were the ruling power in many countries. The English had colonies in North and South America, Africa, Asia, Australia. They controlled the money, power and the influence.

These days, English is used as an international language because English is considered the language of business and technology. The countries with the money (US, UK, etc) use English.

If you want to compete in today's business market or use today's technology you have to understand/speak/read English.

I feel it is because America used to be the world's financial superstar and many businesspeople in the US don't speak anything other than English.

I predict Mandarin Chinese will start becoming more and more common in business transactions. English is my third language, but I'm not a businessperson. My cousin is and she doesn't speak English at all. She does, however, speak her native Swedish, French and Mandarin Chinese. She says she uses the Chinese more than the French nowadays. A bit scary, no?

I really hope some day the US wakes up and requires a second language for all it's graduating students. It would at least bring us up on par with the rest of the industrialized nations.

Well in my opinion, I think that it's because America is into so many things.... They are all around the world doing business and such and if other people didn't learn the language then how would they get their things. Like their merchandises and trades.
